The Penguins will head into tonight’s game against the New York Rangers with a defensive unit that is being held together by duct tape and bobby pins. But before we delve into the defensive doom and despair, we have a whole lot more to examine on this week’s episode of the PensBurgh Podcast.
We kicked off the show with recaps of the games against the Flyers (5-2 L), Capitals (4-3 OTW), and Capitals (5-4 OTW).
We also look ahead to the Penguins’ first game of the season against the New York Rangers. And in doing so, we examine the Rangers’ current rebuild and talk about the rising stars the team has — like the 2020 number one overall pick, Alexis Lafreniere, and Kaapo Kakko. The team’s rebuild is happening faster than many anticipated, and we see when the Rangers could return to Metropolitan Division prominence.
On the flip side, the Penguins’ defense is in shambles early on this season. Mike Matheson, Marcus Pettersson, and Juuso Riikola have already suffered longer term injuries. Frank and Garrett try to see what the Penguins can do to help alleviate some of the struggles they might have on the blue line for the foreseeable future.
