Perplexity: A Mystery Podcast

It's the summer of 1725, in a small village called Kisiljevo, in what is now Serbia. A man named Petar Blagojevich has been dead for about ten weeks.

In that time, nine people in the village have died. Some of them, according to the villagers, died within just a day or so of falling ill. Before they died, several of the villagers claimed Petar had come to them in the night, lain on top of them, and choked them. Petar was even said to have visited his son, requesting food. When his son refused to give him anything, Petar killed him with dozens of bites, draining him of his blood.

The villagers are terrified, and they know what needs to be done. They need to open his grave. The villagers pry it open but they find Petar’s body is not decayed. There's fresh blood in his mouth. His hair and nails had grown longer. There's new skin where his old skin has peeled away. So they drove a stake through Petar’s heart. Blood poured from his ears and the mouth. They then burned his body to ash.

A little over a century later, in 1897, a novelist in London will publish a book about a tall, elegant, charming nobleman in a castle, who sleeps in a coffin, and seduces his victims. It would be the story that would go onto shape one of the most iconic pieces of folklore of all time.

Today, we will be revisiting the story of one of the most influential and iconic rappers of all time. He helped redefine the sound of West Coast hip hop, but he was also a young man who had just as many enemies as he did friends. But his life was tragically cut short at the young age of 25 on September 7th, 1996.

His case has been seemingly cold for over 25 years, and has resulted in endless conspiracies. In July of 2023, a new search warrant was executed in connection to his murder, and now it seems the answers may have been there all along. The Duane Davis trial commenced in August and September of 2026 and a recent docuseries, Sean Combs: The Reckoning put Diddy in the line of fire.

Jason Corbett, an Irish man living in North Carolina, was brutally murdered in his home on August 2, 2015 by his second wife, Molly Martens Corbett, and her father, Thomas Martens, a retired FBI agent. Both Molly and Thomas claimed they acted in self-defense, but were later found guilty of second-degree murder and sentenced to 20–25 years in prison after evidence and testimony cast doubt on their story.

On Saturday May 3, 2008, a 47 year old woman, a wife, a doctor, a mother, was found dead in the creek off a hiking trail near Lake City, CO. In the 16th to 18th centuries, hundreds of people across Central Europe engineered their own executions in the hope of dying “in a state of grace.” Suicide was a mortal sin, but murder was a capital crime, and execution after confession was seen as a path to salvation. In this episode we discuss several real cases of so-called “suicide by proxy,” including Agnes Catherina Schickin in 1704, Eva Lizlfellnerin in 1762, and Ursula Waserin in 1723. We’ll look at how religion, law, and despair combined to create a tragic pattern of crimes that were all eerily similar, and ask why authorities took so long to shut down the deadly loophole.
