Perplexity: A Mystery Podcast

You left your keys on the counter, just like you always do. But now — they're gone. Not lost. Not misplaced. Gone. You turn the house upside down, retracing your every step, you even check the couch cushions several times. Nothing. Days later, you see your keys. Sitting on the counter. Exactly where you left them days ago. Like they never left at all.

You tell yourself it's just forgetfulness. You laugh it off as a trick of the mind. But what if it wasn't? Today we're revisiting time slips, stories of portals opening, objects disappearing and reappearing in other locations, and allegations that it was all facilitated by the government.

Are these moments where time stopped? or bent? Did the government create another version of now? Did this even happen?

Imagine driving on the highway one day and seeing a pink and purple minivan roll past you. There are hundreds and hundreds of butterflies painted across the hood, and a beautiful young woman's photograph is on the side panel. Then in bold letters, running down the length of the doors you read the words: “Caravan to Catch a Killer.” You wonder what it’s for.

Seated at the wheel is an older woman with shaggy bangs and silver blonde hair. She’s a mother and her name is Dr. Maggie Zingman. Maggie has logged hundreds of thousands of miles, determined to get eyes on her daughter’s case. Her daughter was a bright and funny eighteen-year-old college student when she was brutally murdered in her Tulsa apartment in the fall of 2004. Her killer remains at large.

Today’s perplexing episode is all about the murder of Brittany Phillips and her mother’s journey for answers and change.

Somewhere off the coast, a naval sonar operator watches a mysterious object silently descend into the ocean at a speed that shouldn't be possible for anything built by human hands. The object also doesn’t make a splash.  Just... suddenly drops and vanishes into the black deep water.

There have been thousands of reports like this around the world for many many years. Objects coming in and out of the water, vanishing beneath the waves and reappearing miles away, and unbothered by pressures that would crush a submarine like a soda can.

Stories have been told through the handwritten logs of old sailors; massive glowing lights shimmering beneath the ocean’s surface. Military pilots around the world have reported objects plunging into the sea and never resurfacing. And today, you can watch footage capturing these objects over the years. The Pentagon has no explanation — and has even gone on record saying “no comment.”

So what are these objects? What are they doing? What do they want? And what does it all mean? Is it possible what we’ve thought about alien travel has been wrong all along?

On October 9, 2020, 27 year old Taylor Parker calls police. She tells dispatch she needs an ambulance. She needs to get to the hospital right away because she just had a baby. A state trooper finds a distraught Taylor in the driver’s side of the vehicle on the side of the road. The placenta was in Taylor’s pants, the umbilical cord was still attached, and her baby was not responsive.

At first to police, this seemed like a dire emergency for Taylor and her newborn baby. But then, things started feeling off. The state trooper noticed dried blood covering Taylor’s body head to toe, yet there was no blood in the car. Then, when she was taken to the Idabel hospital, Taylor refused a vaginal ultrasound. With the testing medical personnel were able to do, doctors quickly determined Taylor had not given birth. Their hearts sank.

Whose baby was this? What happened? And where was the mother? This is the story of Taylor Parker, Reagan Hancock, and Braxlynn Sage.

In the shadows of mystical forests, beneath the surface of murky lakes, and even in our own backyards, there continue to be reports of unidentifiable creatures from all around the world. Stories of cryptids have been passed down for centuries. They often have similar physical descriptions, despite being from other sides of the globe. Are these simply myths passed down through generations, or are they fragments of truth waiting to be uncovered?

While there are hundreds of cryptids out there, today we are talking about just two. First, I will take you deep into the forests of central Vermont, chasing one of New England's most enduring — and genuinely unsettling — pieces of folklore.

Then we are heading to the flat and wide open spaces of the central Kansas prairie. Specifically, a body of water outside Inman, Kansas, known officially, as the Big Sinkhole.

On April 26, 2010, 16 year old Ali Lowitzer from Spring, TX disappeared just after stepping off of her school bus. She told her mother Jo Ann she was walking to her job at the local Burger Barn, excited to pick up her pay check. This would later be confirmed by multiple eye witnesses. Ali stepped off the bus, sent a text message to her friend, then her phone shut off. No trace of Ali has ever been found. Over 16 years later, her loved ones are still searching for answers.

I had the amazing opportunity to connect with Ali’s mother Jo Ann at Crime Con this year and immediately felt connected to her. If Ali were still here, she and I would’ve graduated at the same time. We would be the same age. Jo Ann is sweet, she’s gentle, she’s a hard worker. And she’s still fighting every day for her missing daughter.

Through this talk with Jo Ann, I also learned she and her family were the ones doing cell phone pings, putting up the missing persons fliers, getting surveillance footage, logging into Ali’s email, and organizing searches.

Police didn’t do much of anything for Ali. They didn’t even issue an Amber alert. They labeled her a runaway. Today, Jo Ann works with her hands to feel closer to her artistic daughter. She connects with other moms of missing children. She advocates for her daughter on social media and at advocacy events. She joined Texas EquuSearch and got formal training, searching for other missing persons.

And she feels she’s found her voice throughout this process. Jo Ann even said sometimes she wonders if her daughter went missing so that she could help find someone else that’s missing. It was an absolute honor to hear Ali’s story through the words of her mother’s heart. And I simply adore her. I know you will too.

By day, this state seems like a beautiful and vibrant place to live. There's mountain views, and spots that feel like an artist’s safe haven. It’s a place that feels alive with music, crafts, and color. But beneath the vibrant surface lies a much older story. This state was officially founded in the late 18th century but it’s been shaped for centuries by Appalachian folklore. This state has long been a crossroads of cultures, beliefs, and… something harder to explain.

Locals will tell you these mountains have memories. That the fog rolling through the valleys isn’t always weather. Stories pass from porch to porch, from bartender to late-night patron—stories of a haunted bridge that was the backdrop for a dark tragedy, ships and crew that seemingly vanished into thin air with no explanation, and unfathomably dark happenings in a boarding school that was supposed to help children. Some call these legends. Others call them warnings.

So today, we’re traveling to the east coast of the United States, and visiting a state where history and the unexplained seeming to blur together. Today’s perplexing episode is all about haunting history and folklore out of North Carolina.
