The U.S. military announced that it used a high-energy laser weapon to destroy three drones linked to Mexican drug cartels near the U.S.-Mexico border, marking one of the most significant operational uses of directed-energy weapons in a domestic border-security mission. The incident occurred in the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas late on Aug. 25 and early Aug. 26, 2026.

SB 1013 is essentially California's attempt to put stronger guardrails around license plate surveillance. The bill would limit how ALPR data can be shared, reduce long-term retention of vehicle-tracking information, require stronger auditing and security controls, and restrict use of the data to specified law-enforcement and missing-person investigations. If enacted, it would represent one of the most significant state-level privacy regulations governing license plate readers in the country.  

A team of researchers from the Netherlands, the UK, the US, and Hong Kong found evidence that people who use profanity more frequently may actually be more honest, not less. The study, published in Social Psychological and Personality Science, challenged the common assumption that swearing is associated with poor character or dishonesty.

In August 1950, Truman was personally answering correspondence when he received yet another letter advocating that the Marine Corps receive independent representation on the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The letter came from Republican Congressman Gordon L. McDonough of California. 

The Marine Corps University document confirms that Truman did in fact call the Marines "the Navy's police force" and compare their advocates to a powerful propaganda machine. However, it also preserves his little-remembered follow-up letter, in which he apologized for his wording, praised the Marines' combat record, and reaffirmed his support for maintaining the Marine Corps as a distinct and vital branch of the U.S. military.    

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has blocked the promotions of four Army officers who had been selected for promotion to brigadier general (one-star rank), according to reporting by The Hill cited by NewsNation. The move is the latest in a series of Pentagon personnel decisions that have generated controversy inside military and political circles.
