The Daily Buzz

Do you support the idea of privatizing Fresno County library operations?

The Fields Fire near Snelling in eastern Merced County has grown to about 1,100 acres and is 40% contained. Smoke from the blaze is drifting into Fresno and surrounding counties, causing noticeable smoky conditions. Evacuation warnings have been lifted, but some road closures remain in place while firefighters continue containment efforts.

With the county's Measure C replacement delayed, Fresno leaders are proposing a $65 million-per-year general-fund measure to offset the loss of Measure C revenue and avoid a projected $54 million annual deficit in city services. City officials say the plan would not raise the sales tax rate, but instead keep it at its current level while giving Fresno flexible funding for essential services after Measure C expires in 2027.

The House approved a bill aimed at restricting congressional stock trading by preventing lawmakers and their families from buying new individual stocks. Supporters call it a major ethics reform, while critics argue it falls short because members can keep and sell stocks they already own, exempts the president and vice president, and includes a controversial voter-ID requirement. The measure now faces an uncertain future in the Senate.

The WSJ article argues that a growing number of researchers and parents are questioning whether some therapists are too quick to endorse family estrangement. Critics say therapy culture has become overly focused on trauma and individual well-being at the expense of reconciliation, while defenders argue that distancing oneself from genuinely harmful relationships can be an important part of recovery. The article ultimately presents the issue as an ongoing debate within both therapy and family-relationship research.

The WSJ portrays Lake Tahoe as a community increasingly challenged by food-conditioned black bears that have become comfortable around humans. Homeowners are investing heavily in prevention measures, wildlife officials are expanding nonlethal management programs, and local groups remain divided over how aggressively authorities should respond as bear encounters become more frequent and costly.

A livestream accidentally captured Sacramento Mayor Kevin McCarty and Vice Mayor Karina Talamantes discussing how to handle people who repeatedly disrupt City Council meetings. The conversation occurred after a heated debate over funding for the Central California Intelligence Center and has sparked debate about public access to government meetings versus maintaining order and safety.

Newsweek's piece is really about transparency, not proving or disproving McConnell's survival. The article argues that after weeks out of public view, limited medical disclosures, and missed Senate votes, three questions remain unresolved: how his condition can be independently verified, why more information hasn't been provided, and what happens if he cannot return to the Senate.

A Secret Service agent on Vice President JD Vance's detail was removed from duty and is under investigation after allegedly leaking information used in a report describing agents' frustrations with Vance's travel habits and family-related transportation requests.

Reports highlight Congress's growing unease with the ongoing Iran conflict. The House narrowly approved a resolution requiring congressional approval for continued military action against Iran, sending a political message to President Trump that some lawmakers in both parties want Congress to play a larger role in decisions about war. While the resolution is mostly symbolic, it underscores increasing concern on Capitol Hill about the direction and duration of the conflict.

Are Fresno PD’s Flock cameras making the city safer or are they government overreach?

The WSJ review views Stuart Fails to Save the Universe as a successful and hilarious reinvention of the Big Bang Theory universe. Rather than repeating the original show's formula, it transforms a former supporting character into an unlikely multiverse hero and leans heavily into science-fiction adventure, creating what many critics see as the franchise's boldest spinoff yet.

Reedley farmer Cesar Mora's highly publicized nectarine dispute with Giumarra Brothers Fruit Company remains unresolved. Pretrial proceedings were delayed after a flurry of last-minute legal motions, settlement talks failed, and the case is still expected to proceed to trial over allegations that Mora violated an exclusive agreement involving his white nectarine crop.
