The University of California Board of Regents has begun its first major public discussion about whether to restore standardized testing in admissions, as new data show declining performance in introductory math courses while other measures of student success remain relatively strong.

  • FOSTER-CARE: Christian Bale's 18-Year Foster-Care Dream Becomes Reality

The California Legislature and Gov. Gavin Newsom have enacted a new law requiring advertisers to clearly tell consumers when advertisements prominently feature AI-generated performers rather than real people. The law, SB 1050, takes effect on January 1, 2027.

Christian Bale, his wife Sandra "Sibi" Blazic, and their nonprofit team spent nearly two decades working to create a unique foster-care community called Together California. The project's core goal is simple but significant: prevent brothers and sisters in foster care from being separated when they enter the system. Foster-care experts cited in the article say sibling relationships are often the most important remaining family connection for children who have lost parental care.

  • FLOCK CAMERAS: Hardware Origins & Hackers

A new investigation by WIRED examines whether Flock Safety, the company behind one of America's fastest-growing networks of automated license-plate-reader cameras, still manufactures its hardware in the United States as prominently as it once claimed. The article concludes that the answer is increasingly unclear because the company now provides much less information about where its cameras are assembled.

A hacker collective called stegan0gram physically removed a Flock Safety license-plate-reader camera, copied its internal storage, and discovered an encryption key stored on the device itself. Using that key, they accessed thousands of videos and images that the company had previously suggested would be inaccessible even if someone obtained the hardware.

The Washington Post reports that artificial intelligence is dramatically increasing the danger posed by the Pentagon's aging computer systems. Senior military cyber leaders say vulnerabilities have increased tenfold as AI enables attackers to find and exploit weaknesses more efficiently, creating growing concern that decades of deferred IT modernization could leave critical U.S. defense networks exposed to future cyberattacks.

  • MONEY: A New Kind Of Capitalism

In-N-Out Burger says its restaurant store managers now earn an average salary of more than $200,000 annually, making them some of the highest-paid managers in the fast-food industry.

In this essay, entrepreneur and investor Nick Hanauer argues that the best way to preserve capitalism is not to abandon markets, but to rethink how they work. He promotes a framework called"Market Humanism," which he says offers a pro-market alternative to both traditional neoliberal economics and anti-market populism.

  • KENNEDY CENTER: Legal Battle Over Renovations, Closure Plans, And The Center's Future

Donald Trump said the Kennedy Center could ultimately be "ripped down" if his administration is not recognized for helping renovate and financially support the institution. The comments came after a judge blocked efforts to place Trump's name on the facility and amid a broader legal battle over renovations, closure plans, and the center's future. A federal judge has since ordered 30 days' advance notice before any demolition-related actions can occur.

Greg Papa’s comeback trail just hit another obstacle. The 49ers’ longtime radio voice is reportedly back in the hospital, now battling advanced heart failure.

  • JURY DUTY: California Seniors Can Permanently Opt Out

The Dome Fire in Yosemite National Park grew rapidly to 1,177 acres with 0% containment as of Sept. 16, 2026. The fire is burning north of Chilnualna Falls, has forced trail closures, and remains under investigation.

Gov. Gavin Newsom has signed a new law that will allow certain elderly Californians to obtain a permanent exemption from jury duty instead of repeatedly requesting excuses every time they receive a summons.

  • EDUCATION: Can An 'AI-Proof' Degree Really Exist?

The Guardian argues that no degree can be guaranteed to be AI-resistant over an entire career. However, fields involving research, engineering, healthcare, creativity, and direct human interaction appear likely to remain more resilient because they depend on qualities AI still struggles to replicate: original thinking, judgment, accountability, empathy, and real-world interpersonal relationships.

Fresno State has launched a new Artificial Intelligence minor to help students gain skills that employers increasingly value. Open to students from a variety of majors, the program includes coursework in machine learning, AI programming, and deep learning, while positioning the university as a regional leader in AI education and workforce development.

  • SURVEY: Controversial Fresno City Council Race Survey Sparks Backlash

The race for Fresno City Council District 1 is becoming one of the city's most competitive contests, with both candidates reporting strong fundraising in August. Naindeep Singh substantially outraised Rob Fuentes, but both campaigns brought in significant financial support heading into the November election.

A voter survey sent to residents in Fresno's City Council District 7 is drawing criticism because it asked questions about candidate Nav Gurm's age, religion, ethnicity, and Sikh religious attire. Both candidates in the race condemned the survey.

The fundraiser was created by Emma Gallegos to assist more than a dozen journalists reportedly laid off from Central Valley news organizations, including The Fresno Bee, The Modesto Bee, and The Stockton Record. Donations are intended to help affected reporters pay for necessities such as housing, food, and medical expenses while they search for new employment.

The article reports that European Union leaders have proposed making Canada the EU's first-ever associate member. The new status does not yet exist and would need to be defined, but it could create a deep partnership spanning trade, defense, technology, energy, Arctic policy, and economic security.

The investigation of Eugene Horsch's Philadelphia home has now been connected to five missing women: Nicole Fusaro, Gabrielle Amarando, Maribel Fresses, Blair Tonzelli, and Amy McHale. Investigators are reviewing more than one million pieces of digital evidence and believe some of the women may be dead, but no bodies have been recovered and many key questions remain unanswered.
