The Philadelphia Flyers failed to extend their winning streak to six games on Thursday night, falling 3-1 to Rick Tocchet’s Arizona Coyotes at the Wells Fargo Center.

Despite out-shooting Arizona 29-18, and doubling them up in shot attempts, the ‘Yotes defeated the Flyers in regulation. The loss was only Philly’s second 60-minute defeat on home ice this season.

Matt Niskanen scored for the orange and black in the final five minutes with Brian Elliott out in favor of the extra attacker to bring the Flyers within a goal, but Phil Kessel buried an empty netter, his second goal of the game, to put the game away with a minute remaining.

There’s no doubt Philadelphia carried play in this one, but Darcy Kuemper and a suffocating defensive effort stymied an offense that had begun to break out after a prolonged slump (The Flyers scored 16 goals in their previous three games, after netting only 19 in the 8 games before that).

There wasn’t much anger on the postgame, but there was a lot of wondering about how this team can come away with the results they deserve more often. Listen to it. It’s pretty good.

If you just look at the box score it’s crazy to think the goaltender is the MVP of a 6-1 victory, but Hart was the man all night. Philly’s 21-year-old goaltender stopped all 15 of the Toronto maple Leafs’ first period shot attempts, and didn’t allow a goal until a stupid pop fly bounced off his back midway through the third to even the score at a goal apiece.

But his teammates did not let him down, taking over the game from that point.

Claude Giroux put the Flyers back ahead a minute-and-a-half later, and the orange and black tide never rolled in after that. The Flyers cruised to a 6-1 win with an insurance goal from Travis Konecny, an empty-netter by Joel Farabee, then a few insult-to-injury tallies by Shayne Gostisbehere and James van Riemsdyk just to make sure Dave Hakstol knew what he was missing.

After a successful November, the Philadelphia Flyers appear to be keeping the good times going in December. Toronto had won four of five since firing Mike Babcock on November 20, but Sheldon Keefe’s crew was no match for Alain Vigneault’s squad, who’ve now won five straight, six of seven, with points in all seven.

The Philadelphia Flyers won their fourth straight, beating the Montreal Canadiens in overtime on Saturday night.

Brian Elliott made 39 saves on 42 shots, bouncing back after allowing a goal just 19 seconds into the game.

Travis Konecny scored for the first time since November 10th in Boston. Oskar Lindblom and Kevin Hayes also scored for the Flyers.

The biggest score of night, however, was easily Ivan Provorov, whose coast-to-coast game winner in overtime was a thing of beauty.
