Now that’s how you lose a hockey game. Up 5-2 in the middle of the second period, the Philadelphia Flyers managed to lose 7-6 to the Toronto Maple Leafs in regulation. James van Riemsdyk’s hat trick against his former team didn’t help the Orange and Black to even one of the two points the team so badly needed, as their already small window to make the postseason got even smaller after tonight’s contest. It was fun while it lasted, but now we should be going. 

Following a 5-2 defeat at the hands of the Washington Capitals, the Flyers now sit five points behind Montreal and Columbus (Blue Jackets currently occupying second wild card spot), seven points behind Carolina for the first wildcard seed, and eleven points behind Pittsburgh for third in the Metro, with only 12 games left to play. 

I hope everybody had a real, real good time.

Because Carter Hart sure didn’t. In the 20-year-old’s first action since February 21, Hart was a little rusty, allowing four goals on 31 shots, and giving up a little more positionally than we were accustomed to seeing prior to the rookie sensation’s injury. 

But if there’s any Flyer who isn’t ready to die just yet, it’s Scott Laughton. Scotty scored a goal, his fourth in five games, to extend his point streak to six games. He also dished out a couple of hits and won seven of 10 faceoffs. While much of the late season focus has been on Travis Sanheim, Nolan Patrick, Philippe Myers, Travis Konecny and Oskar Lindblom, the 20th overall pick from 2012 has been steadily carving out a role for himself all season.

The Ottawa Senators are so bad that I saw, with my own eyes, Andrew MacDonald break up a zone entry, strip the puck carrier, and break out. 

Now, a 3-2 final score doesn’t typically indicate one team vastly outplayed the other, but on this night the Philadelphia Flyers were the much better team. They weren’t able to convert the chances they created for themselves, but outshooting Ottawa 36-22 and out-attempting them 65-46 displays the orange and black’s territorial dominance, even considering it took seven minutes for the Flyers to record their first shot on net. 

Michael Raffl (1G 1A), Philippe Myers (3 shots, 2 hits, 13:02 TOI), and Nolan Patrick (1A) all stood out in the win, and the depth showing itself was a bonus on a night that the Boys on Broad were without Jakub Voracek, serving the first of his two-game suspension.

And bounce back they did!

After being run out of the building by the Washington Capitals on Wednesday, although they did make it interesting at the end, the Philadelphia Flyers put together a nice margin of victory of their own, beating the New York Islanders 5-2 at the Nassau Coliseum on Saturday night.

Jake Voracek had a phenomenal game, registering a couple of assists while also finding himself amidst a controversy thanks to a “reverse hit” thrown on Johnny Boychuk early in the third period.

While it wasn’t the cleanest play, Jake got a five minute major for injuring the Isles’ defenseman, and then was the subject of a few embarrassing attempts at retribution by the Islanders, none of which were particularly effective against the deceptively strong winger.

Ryan Hartman picked up his first goal in orange and black, Shayne Gostisbehere notched a pair of assists, Ivan Provorov and Travis Sanheim were each plus-four (if you’re into that kind of thing), and Brian Elliott stopped 25 of 27 shots to earn the victory. Good times!
