In this episode, Jared Powell discusses a research review which he has done for Physio Network, based on a systematic review of large to massive rotator cuff tears and how an exercise group compared to a surgical group. We dive deep into what the study involves, its limitations and it’s results. Finally, Jared gives us some advice on how to best make these decisions with patients and how to have those harder conversations with patients who are very surgery focused.
Jared is an experienced musculoskeletal physiotherapist from the Gold Coast, Australia. He has an interest in the shoulder joint and is currently studying for a PhD in this area. Jared teaches on the shoulder globally and has written several book chapters, peer reviewed articles and presented at various conferences.

In this episode, Dr Travis Pollen takes us through a recent research review he did for Physio Network exploring younger patients with a traumatic mensical injury. We look at the results of a recent paper comparing those who had surgery and those who had physiotherapy. Interestingly the results at two years were very similar but this opened up a lot of questions and nuance about what happens within that two years.
Dr Travis Pollen is a personal trainer and has a PhD in Rehabilitation Sciences (Drexel University). He also holds a master’s degree in Biomechanics and Movement Science (University of Delaware). His research interests focus on movement screening, injury risk appraisal, and return to play testing in athletes.
