  • The Hardest Class to Teach: Mixed-Level Pilates Classes

    Send us Fan Mail

Almost every Pilates teacher has experienced it.

One client is stepping onto a Reformer for the very first time. Another has been practising Pilates for years. Someone has chronic back pain. Someone else is an athlete looking for a challenge.

How do you teach all of them in the same class?

In this episode of The Pilates Exchange, Hannah and Christian explore one of the most common questions they receive from teachers: how to confidently teach mixed-level Pilates classes without feeling like you have to create a different workout for every person in the room.

They discuss why great teaching isn't about knowing hundreds of exercises, but about understanding movement, communication, observation, and motor learning. You'll learn practical strategies for designing classes where every client can succeed, regardless of experience level.

    In this episode, we discuss:

    •  why mixed-level classes are the reality of teaching Pilates
    •  the biggest mistake new teachers make
    •  why every client doesn't need a different exercise
    •  how to create different challenges using the same movement
    •  the importance of teaching skills instead of choreography
    •  managing your attention without trying to fix everyone
    •  why silence can be one of your most powerful teaching tools
    •  how to create meaningful progression without simply making exercises harder

Whether you're a newly certified instructor or an experienced teacher looking to refine your coaching, this episode will help you think differently about class planning and what it really means to teach.

At Performance Fit Pilates in Nürnberg, we teach clients with different backgrounds, abilities and levels of experience across Pilates Mat, Reformer and equipment classes. Our approach to mixed-level teaching isn't simply about giving everyone a harder or easier exercise. We focus on thoughtful programming, adaptable teaching and helping each person find an appropriate challenge within the class.

  • It's Never About Five Minutes

    Send us Fan Mail

Why does a Pilates studio close its doors the moment class begins? Isn't five minutes late close enough?

In this solo episode of The Pilates Exchange, Hannah explores one of the most common questions she receives from clients and explains why the answer goes far beyond punctuality.

Drawing on years of experience—including times when allowing late arrivals disrupted classes, affected safety, and diminished the experience for everyone—she shares the operational, educational, and philosophical reasons behind the policy.

This isn't a conversation about enforcing rules for the sake of rules.

It's about protecting the quality of an experience, respecting everyone's time, and creating an environment where clients can learn, move, and feel cared for from the very first minute.

    In this episode, we discuss:

    •  why class starts before the first exercise
    •  how late arrivals affect every client in the room
    •  the role of communication in keeping clients safe
    •  why warm-ups are about preparation, not just movement
    •  how small operational decisions shape your business culture
    •  the difference between having rules and having standards
    •  why protecting the client experience sometimes means saying no

Whether you're a Pilates teacher, studio owner, coach, or someone who simply appreciates businesses that operate with intention, this episode offers a different perspective on what a closed door really represents.

At Performance Fit Pilates in Nürnberg, our classes begin on time and the studio doors close when class starts. This isn't simply an attendance rule. It protects the time we use to welcome clients, check in about injuries or changes, prepare for the session and create a focused environment for everyone in the room. As our studio and teaching team have grown, clear and consistent standards help us provide the same thoughtful experience across our Pilates Mat, Reformer and equipment classes.

  • The Hardest Part of Running a Business Isn't What You Think

    Send us Fan Mail

When people dream about opening a studio, they often think the hardest part will be finding clients, hiring the right team, or managing finances.

But what if the hardest part is something much less obvious?

    Decision-making.

In this solo episode of The Pilates Exchange, Hannah reflects on recent conversations with aspiring studio owners and shares what she's learned from years of running and growing a business. From choosing software and setting prices to considering major investments and navigating uncertainty, every decision comes with risk—and no one can tell you exactly how it will turn out.

    In this episode, we discuss:

    • why certainty is a luxury entrepreneurs rarely have
    • the difference between trusting your intuition and relying on your emotions
    • how knowing your numbers gives you confidence, not guarantees
    • why good decisions don't always lead to good outcomes
    • and how every decision becomes an opportunity to learn and improve

Whether you own a business, dream of starting one, or simply find yourself facing difficult decisions, this conversation is a reminder that success isn't about predicting the future. It's about making thoughtful choices, learning from the results, and having the courage to keep moving forward.

  • Who Decides What's "Correct" in Pilates?

    Send us Fan Mail

Spend enough time on social media and you'll eventually meet the "Pilates Police."

The people who are certain there is only one correct way to teach, one correct way to move, and one correct answer to every question.

In this episode of The Pilates Exchange, Hannah and Christian explore how social media has changed the way we discuss movement—and why certainty, public criticism, and fear-based messaging may be doing more harm than good.

    We discuss:

    • why the loudest voices online aren't always the wisest
    • the difference between evidence, opinion, and dogma
    • how fear-based cueing affects clients and teachers
    • why respectful debate moves our profession forward
    • and how to stay curious while continuing to learn and grow

We don't believe great teaching comes from trying to prove everyone else wrong.

It comes from asking better questions, staying open to new ideas, and making thoughtful decisions based on the person standing in front of you.

Because at the end of the day, our responsibility isn't to win arguments on the internet.

It's to help people move with confidence, competence, and care.

At Performance Fit Pilates in Nürnberg, we believe good Pilates teaching is about more than deciding whether a movement is simply “right” or “wrong.” Our approach combines the Pilates method with current exercise and movement science, while recognizing that people bring different bodies, experiences and goals into the studio. We want our clients to feel confident exploring movement, asking questions and learning about their bodies without being afraid of constantly getting something “wrong.”

Is it stronger abs? Better posture? Improved mobility?

Or is it something much bigger?

  • Intellectual Property, Inspiration, and Giving Credit: Where Do We Draw the Line?

    Send us Fan Mail

What happens when inspiration becomes imitation?

This episode was inspired by a conversation with a member of the Pilates community whose teacher training materials—including her written manuals, photographs, and original work—were copied and resold by someone who had enrolled in, but never completed, her program.

While that story sparked this discussion, this episode is about something much bigger.

As educators, coaches, and movement professionals, where do we draw the line between learning from others and creating something of our own?

    We discuss:

    • why intellectual property matters in movement education
    • the difference between inspiration, collaboration, and copying
    • giving credit to the teachers and methods that shaped us
    • creating original manuals, teacher trainings, and educational resources
    • why every method is built on the shoulders of those who came before us
    • and how integrity ultimately becomes part of your professional reputation

Every teacher is influenced by someone.

The question is not whether you borrow ideas.

The question is whether you acknowledge them, build upon them thoughtfully, and create something that genuinely reflects your own experience and perspective.

Because your reputation is built not only on what you teach—but on how you choose to teach it.

  • Pilates, Matcha, and the Reformer Boom: Where Is the Industry Headed?

    Send us Fan Mail

    Pilates is everywhere right now.

From luxury studios and gym floors to social media trends, celebrity endorsements, and wellness influencers, the method has experienced a level of popularity that few could have predicted even a decade ago.

But is this growth entirely positive?

In this episode of The Pilates Exchange, Hannah and Christian take a candid look at the current Pilates landscape, discussing what excites them, what concerns them, and where they believe the industry may be heading next.

    We discuss:

    • the explosive growth of reformer Pilates
    • the influence of social media and wellness culture
    • whether Pilates is becoming a trend or a sustainable movement practice
    • the opportunities and challenges created by rapid industry growth
    • the role of teacher education and coaching quality
    • what gets lost when marketing becomes more important than methodology
    • and what we hope the future of Pilates looks like

This is not a conversation about gatekeeping or nostalgia.

It is a conversation about growth, quality, accessibility, and how we can ensure that the increasing popularity of Pilates ultimately serves the people who practice it.

Because while trends come and go, great teaching, thoughtful movement, and meaningful client experiences never go out of style.

At Performance Fit Pilates in Nürnberg, we see the current growth of Pilates firsthand. Our approach respects the foundations of the Pilates method while also incorporating what we continue to learn from exercise and movement science. We offer Pilates Mat, Reformer and equipment training and believe Pilates can continue to evolve without losing the principles that make the method so valuable.

  • The Hidden Psychology of Group Fitness

    Send us Fan Mail

Why do some people always choose the same reformer? Stand in the back of the room? Avoid certain springs—or always add more?

In this episode of The Pilates Exchange, Hannah and Christian Teutscher explores the psychology behind the choices we make in movement spaces and why they are often about much more than fitness.

Because people do not just bring their bodies into class. They bring their history, identity, fears, habits, and nervous systems too.

    We discuss:

    • why predictability can feel safe
    • the psychology of comparison and challenge
    • why some people push too hard while others hold back
    • what these patterns reveal about us as humans
    • and how teachers can approach them with curiosity rather than judgment

Movement is never just physical. It is emotional, social, and deeply human.

Because sometimes the most interesting thing about movement is not what it reveals about our bodies—but what it reveals about ourselves.

At Performance Fit Pilates in Nürnberg, we know that what happens in a Pilates class isn't only physical. Confidence, previous movement experiences, comparison and even where someone chooses to position themselves in the room can influence how they experience a class. Our goal is to create an environment where clients can challenge themselves without feeling that they need to compete, perform or move like the person next to them.

  • Tactile Cueing: Helpful Tool or Lazy Teaching?

    Send us Fan Mail

Touch is one of the most debated topics in movement education.

Some teachers believe tactile cueing is one of the most effective tools available. Others argue that it is often overused, creates dependency, or becomes a shortcut for unclear communication.

In this episode of The Pilates Exchange, Hannah and Christian dive into the tactile cueing debate and explore a question that is far more interesting than whether touch is "good" or "bad":

How do great teachers decide which tool to use, when, and why?

    We discuss:

    • when tactile cueing can accelerate learning and body awareness
    • why touching a client should never be the default solution
    • the difference between helping someone learn and simply moving them into position
    • bodily autonomy, consent, and respecting client boundaries
    • how teacher ego can sometimes influence coaching decisions
    • whether tactile cueing creates independence or dependency
    • and why the best teachers develop a wide range of communication tools rather than relying on a single approach

Ultimately, this conversation is not really about touch.

It is about decision-making, teaching philosophy, communication, and how we can better serve the human being standing in front of us.

Because tactile cueing is neither inherently good nor inherently bad.

Like every coaching choice, it should be made intentionally, respectfully, and in service of the client's learning experience.

At Performance Fit Pilates in Nürnberg, thoughtful, individualized coaching is central to how we teach. Tactile cueing is one of many tools our teachers may use, with respect for each client's preferences and bodily autonomy.

  • The Problem With “Beginner” and “Advanced” Classes

    Send us Fan Mail

One of the most emotionally loaded things in fitness are the words:

     “beginner” and “advanced.”

In this episode of The Pilates Exchange, Hannah explores why adults often struggle with movement labels far more than we realize — and how those labels can shape confidence, behavior, shame, ego, and even the way people experience their own bodies.

    We talk about why:

    •  beginner does not mean weak or incapable
    •  advanced does not mean perfect or pain-free
    •  movement is not linear
    •  and good coaching is about adaptability, not forcing everybody into the same experience

This conversation also explores how language changes the emotional tone of a class, why precision and control are often misunderstood in modern fitness culture, and how thoughtful coaching creates space for people to progress safely and confidently over time.

At Performance Fit Pilates in Nürnberg, we work with clients across different experience levels in Pilates Mat, Reformer and equipment classes. We believe “beginner” and “advanced” should help guide someone's learning—not define their ability or worth.
