Recently the Philippine Air Force or PAF has stepped up its efforts to obtain modern fighters, narrowing down their final selection to either the advanced Block 70 F-16 or the Saab JAS 39 C and D Gripen. This competition comes at a time with ever increasing tensions in the South China Sea.  

The economic and geostrategic importance of the South China Sea cannot be understated: Some one third of global maritime shipping passes through it, accounting for over 3 Trillion Dollars in trade each year. 

Today the PAF operates some 12 Korean Aerospace Industries FA-50 Fighting Eagle Light combat aircraft.  These FA-50s began operations for the PAF in 2015, after a decade long hiatus following the 2005 retirement of the Northrop F-5.

 

Either the Block 70 F-16 or JAS 39 Gripen would be a significant step up from the FA50, let’s take a look at the proposed offers for each aircraft along with their pros and cons for the PAF

Dassault Rafale - The Omin Role Fighter

The Dassault Rafale is a French Designed and produced multirole fighter.  Intended to perform aerial reconnaissance, air superiority, interdiction, ground support, strike missions, anti-ship, and even  nuclear deterrence missions.  Because of this vast range of  missions, the Rafale is often referred to as the OmniRole fighter.  Notable features include a delta wing, canards, twin engines, a single vertical stabilizer and a permanently extended refueling probe.  The word Rafale translates to gust of wind or burst of fire in a more military sense.

It’s official, Switzerland has chosen the Lockheed Martin F35A Lightning II as its newest fighter plane.  In a 5.5 Billion Dollar deal that adds a 15th nation to the growing base of F35 users, the agreement also comes alongside an additional 2.1 Billion dollar deal to buy the surface to air Patriot missile defense system.  Switzerland’s decision to procure the F35 has sent shockwaves throughout Europe.  The Lightning II beat out the  Dassault Rafale which is produced in France, the Eurofighter Typhoon which is jointly produced by Germany, Italy, the UK and Spain, and even the Boeing Super Hornet.  Additionally, Swiss voters decided to remove the Saab Gripen from Switzerland's fighter competition some seven years ago.

Part of the NASA technology demonstrators, X-31 was designed to test thrust vectoring technology by using a delta wing, canards, and vectored thrust from the engine.   Designed and built by  Rockwell and Messerschmitt-Bölkow-Blohm or MBB, The X-31 was  part of a joint US and German project known as the Enhanced Fighter Maneuverability program or EFM.  The goal of the EFM was to use thrust vectoring and an advanced flight control system to provide enhanced control authority in pitch and yaw, this resulted in significantly more maneuverability than most conventional fighters.

Widely considered the best air superiority fighter in the world, the Lockheed Martin F-22 is a fifth generation, twin engine, single seat, all weather stealth tactical fighter aircraft.  Developed from decades of air combat experience the F-22 excels in its one true mission:  to defeat any air adversary it encounters. This is accomplished by the Raptor’s incredible performance, advanced avionics, and stealth profile. Notable features include twin tails, a trapezoidal wing, and a golden canopy which is coated with a thin layer of Indium Tin Oxide or ITO  which acts like an EM shield to maintain stealth characteristics.

The Saab JAS 39 Gripen is a Mach 2 single engine light multirole fighter which implements fly-by-wire controls and makes use of a relaxed stability design for improved maneuverability.  Notable features include a delta wing with forward canards, and side air intakes.  Manufactured by Saab, a Swedish aerospace company, the Gripen was designed to replace the Draken and Viggen, both successful previous Saab designs.  The Gripen is designed to be easy to maintain, and have quick turnaround times between missions.

The F-16XL is a cranked arrow  delta wing variant of the hugely successful F-16 Fighting Falcon or Viper.   Initially conceived as a technology demonstrator for General Dynamics, the F-16XL was entered into the Enhanced Tactical Fighter competition, and has reemerged as a potential solution for today's Air Force.
