NEW LONDON — Six of seven Pipestone Area Schools wrestlers earned a spot on the podium at the conclusion of the New London Spicer Invitational Friday, Jan. 17. The meet capped a grueling week with four duals and this bracket-formatted tournament. “I think we wrestled well,” PAS head coach Paul Young said. “But, we could have been better.” Young said the schedule was devised in such a way to make the wrestlers “embrace the grind,” which will help them during the postseason — which is roughly one month away from this edition of the Pipestone County Star. • HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: Sehr, Luverne stop Pipestone's win streak

The Pipestone Area Schools’ boys basketball team came into last Friday’s Big South Conference contest riding a three-game winning streak. Luverne senior guard Carter Sehr put an end to such good fortune as the Cardinal dropped in 30 points on 11 field goals, including a pair of 3-pointers, and a spotless 6-of-6 from the free-throw line. And Luverne swept the regular-season series between the rivals, taking this one 73-54 at PAS Gymnasium on Friday, Jan. 17. “He’s a multi-dimensional scorer,” PAS head coach Michael Slaba said. “He can get going from the perimeter and the inside. He’s a smart player,...

  • HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: RTR girls clamp down on 'D' to win

TYLER —  Defense continues to be the calling card for the Russell-Tyler-Ruthton girls’ basketball team. “Defensively, we work hard on it (in practice),” RTR head coach Steve Hesse said. “We talked about it before the game, we wanted to hold them (Murray County Central) below their season average point total, and we did well with that.” The Rebels were averaging close to 48 points per game. But, not in this Red Rock Conference contest as RTR downed MCC, 52-40, on Thursday, Jan. 16. at Knights Gymnasium. RTR also had a little more offensive balance, too. Adalia Matzner paced eight different...

  • HIGH SCHOOL GYMNASTICS: Douty sets new benchmarks

WORTHINGTON — Pipestone Area Schools’ multi-time state qualifier Kaysa Douty reached for even loftier numbers during a Big South Conference meet on Tuesday, Jan. 14. Douty established a new school record in the all-around competition as well as the floor exercise as part of a dazzling night. PAS head coach Stacie Wallace said Douty’s performance in the floor exercise was aided by a strong third tumbling pass. “Kaysa’s third pass on the floor is a round off, 1 1/2-twist, dive roll,” Wallace explained. The coach also said Douty changed another one of her leap passes, and added overall difficulty to...

Leslie said he thought that was long enough and that it was time for someone younger to step into the role. He plans to remain on the fire department for a few years to help with the transition.
