  • COLLEGE SPOTLIGHT: McGee contributes to Bethany hoops

MANKATO — Arinn McGee is currently enjoying her freshman season as a member of the Bethany Lutheran College women’s basketball team. Bethany Lutheran is an NCAA Division III school playing in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference. McGee, a 6-foot-2 center, joined the team during the summer after transferring from the University of Minnesota, where she played intramural sports. This season, McGee is averaging 4.4 points and 2.9 rebounds per contest for the Vikings — who are enduring a tough season at 1-12, including a 64-63 loss to Wisconsin-Superior. McGee is playing on the same squad with former Pipestone Area Schools...

  • HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: Edgerton girls earn historic win

EDGERTON — Edgerton Public High School’s Kami Smit and Elliott Fleischman made the back-end of double-bonus free throws late during overtime. That was just enough to give the Flying Dutch a historic 56-54 win over Southwest Minnesota Christian on Tuesday, Jan. 7. It’s believed this was the first win for Edgerton over SWC in girls basketball since Jan. 24, 2012. Interestingly enough, the final outcome of that contest was eerily similar with the Flying Dutch nipping the Eagles 56-55. SWC was ahead 19-16 at intermission, but Edgerton established a 44-41 edge until Eagle Madyson Fey connected on a 3-pointer to...

The Arrows scored 113 points at conference, spearheaded by gold-medal-winning performances for No. 1 Class A 121-pounder Miklo Hernandez and by Haden Mulvihill at 152 pounds. “Haden put together three really good matches,” PAS head coach Paul Young said. “That’s what I want to see from him. • GYMNASTICS: Arrows third at Winterfest

MARSHALL — Pipestone Area Schools’ multi-time state-qualifying gymnast Kaysa Douty earned a third-place finish at the Winterfest Invitational Saturday. The competition was conducted at Marshall Middle School, which provides for a unique environment. The Arrow rotation went floor exercise followed by vault, uneven bars and balance beam. “Kaysa had a few glitches on her first two events, but her maturity as an athlete showed in the way she finished the meet,” PAS head coach Stacie Wallace noted. Douty, a sophomore, had the spotlight to herself in the balance beam, and she produced a winning event score of 8.85. That helped...
