  • The Gift of Exoneration: Maurice Caldwell
21 years in prison! Maurice Caldwell was convicted in 1991 of murder in the Alemany Housing Project in San Francisco, CA. No physical evidence connected Maurice to the crime and none of the surviving victims identified him as the shooter. He was convicted solely on the testimony of one person, another example of how eyewitness identification can go wrong and lead to conviction of the innocent. Maurice was released in 2010 after a judge found his attorney to be ineffective for failing to investigate and the post-conviction investigation resulted in a confession from one of the true perpetrators. Also provided were declarations from two witnesses who saw the murder and identified the shooters as people other than Maurice. All three say that Maurice was not involved in any way. Join Maurice and Paige Kaneb, a supervising attorney from the Northern California Innocence Project, for the details of this justice gone awry.

  • The Gift of Exoneration: Gloria Killian
17+ years in prison! Gloria Killian was convicted in 1986 of first degree felony murder, robbery, and conspiracy and received a sentence of 32 years to life for the murder of a Sacramento, CA couple. At the time, she was a third year law student with no criminal history. In 2002, Gloria walked out of prison a free woman after the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals overturned her conviction when it determined the conviction was based solely on perjured testimony. Six years later, the prosecuting Deputy District Attorney was tried by the State Bar of California and found guilty of unethical conduct in her case. Gloria describes her checkered journey along with Amy Kennedy, a lawyer and case manager from the Northern California Innocence Project.

  • The Gift of Exoneration: Obie Anthony
17 years in prison! Obie Anthony was convicted of a 1994 attempted robbery and the murder of Felipe Gonzales in 1995. The conviction, based on the testimony of one witness who operated a nearby house of prostitution, had a prior manslaughter conviction, and was known to carry and use firearms, was overturned in 2011. Northern California Innocence Project Legal Director, Linda Starr, said, “Police purposely ignored and hid evidence that did not support their theory…The prosecution falsely denied that they granted their star witness a deal for his cooperation and failed to correct his lies at trial. And Mr. Anthony’s own attorney failed to investigate the case. For their failures, Mr. Anthony has spent 17 years in prison for a murder he did not commit – and the actual murderer has remained free. This cannot be considered justice” (Santa Clara Law News & Events). Tune in to hear Obie Anthony and Linda Starr tell Obie’s story of his conviction, exoneration and his release 17 years later.

Simply put, it is the illegal trade of human beings for commercial sexual exploitation or forced labor. It is so widespread that the United Nations adopted the international Trafficking Protocol legal agreement in 2000 in Palermo, Italy to suppress and punish trafficking, especially in woman and children.
