In episode 15 of the Platform to Perform Podcast I spoke with the brains behind The Mindful Mover, Phillip and Martina Chubb.
I first came across their work on Instagram, where their training footage was flying in the face of conventional wisdom, as they were achieving incredible feats such as planche push ups and one arm chin ups…and then posting about training once a week.
As if this wasn’t impressive enough, other feats such as back squatting just shy of double bodyweight, dropping into the middle splits (both of which without any warm up) and my personal favourite, a handstand push up…on gymnastics rings…meant I was desperate to get these two on.
With a passion for training so wide, the conversation flowed effortlessly as I got The Mindful Mover’s thoughts on:
- How to work towards ‘The Big 5’ – exercises which provide the largest amount of ‘free gains’ to other movements without specifically training for them
Training for mobility, how to develop it once and avoid wasting time on ‘dedicated’ mobility sessionsWhat the sucker mindset is, and how to avoid it (and other biases)How Phillip and Martina have dispelled myths with their training, such as making improvements in skill and strength when training once a week, achieving static skills, such as a straddle planche, despite never training isometrically (i.e. using static movements)You can follow Phillip and Martina’s work via the below links:
