  • That's Code for "Babies" - We Review the Reviews of "Payback in Death."
For this episode of "We Review the Reviews," Jen is on Vacation, so it's just AJ and Tara.
Since this is a brand new book, there aren't as many reviews as with a book that's a bit older, but we still found some "doozies."
    Among those are:
Oh too predictable and Eve is one-dimensional
Love scenes are terrible and why doesn't Eve ever have cramps
    Story is thin and trite
    Antagonists are kind of stupid
We have someone who starts out their review saying, "How I hate reading J.D. Robb." and ends with: "Why do I read the Eve Dallas books? Because there is another writer whose name I can never remember whose protagonist is also police and whose name is Eve? Dee?" We wish this person would just figure out who that other author is and go read them.
Also, that person who says they're "disappointed with Eve and Roarke's relationship" because it's "not going anywhere," which we think is just code for "Babies."
And, of course, we also have the person suggesting that maybe there's a ghostwriter.
    BUT...
"Bob" gave the book a 4 Star rating and says "Dallas's investigation is clean and focused. There are no sidetrack plot developments that take her out of the investigation."
Someone who said: "No grand fireworks in this one, but that didn't stop me from turning the pages as fast as I could read them. I was hooked; I needed to know 'whodunnit'."
A really lovely review from someone who said: "Strong characters and relationships, unique plot lines and tight pacing make this a must read series for fans of crime and police procedurals. I highly recommend Payback In Death to fans of the In Death series and to everyone who enjoys a challenging mystery and police procedural."
You knew we had to have one positive Susan Ericksen review with the reviewer saying, "But the combination of JD Robb's writing and Susan Ericksen's narration have kept me sane in February and September for almost thirty years now. That deserves 5 stars unless she does something egregious."
And we end with a reviewer who thanks Nora for enriching her life for so many years.
    We agree!

  • Drying Tubes & Golden Boobs - We Talk with Adam Bowers from "Basic Snitches"
In this episode of the podcast, we talk with Tara's co-host on the "Basic Snitches" podcast, Adam Bowers! Adam is somewhat familiar with the "In Death" world because of Tara, but has never read an "In Death" book before. So Tara thought it would be fun to give him an "In Death" book to read and get his reactions. The book that Tara decided to give to him was "Witness in Death," mostly because Adam is a huge Agatha Christie fan.
Adam's overall thoughts about the book is that it's a lot of straight people fucking, and he's not wrong there. Also, as AJ thought when she first read this book for the first time, he thinks Roarke is kind of a dick. He pictures Eve as actress Jane Lynch, which we're really not mad about. He's also not really happy that there's still a lot of income inequality in Nora's future. But he does think that Eve's an interesting character.
At the end of the podcast, Adam answers our fan questions and we find out some really interesting things about him.
Overall, this is a really entertaining episode, and we hope you enjoy it!

  • Emotional Terrorism: We Review "Payback in Death" by J.D. Robb
***ATTENTION! THIS EPISODE TALKS ABOUT THE LATEST BOOK IN THE "IN DEATH" SERIES! IF YOU HAVEN'T READ THIS BOOK YET, PLEASE FEEL FREE TO SKIP THIS EPISODE!***
It's finally here!! Our review of "Payback in Death." We are very happy to say that we all just loved this book!
Starting with the first chapter where Eve and Roarke visit Roarke's family in Ireland during the last leg of their 3rd Anniversary Trip. Eve gives Roarke his anniversary present from her: A painting done by Yancy of Eve and Roarke surrounded by Roarke's Irish family, including his own mother, Siobhan, and also including Summerset and Galahad. This chapter really hit us all in the feels in a big way. It's emotional terrorism, but we loved every bit of it.
When Eve and Roarke finally make their way back to New York, Eve is called in on a case before they can even get their bags unpacked. Eve's a bit annoyed, but when she sees that the one calling in the murder is Webster, and that the person who is dead is Webster's former boss at IAB, and his mentor and father figure, Captain Martin Greenleaf, Eve can't say no.
The murder is set up to look like a suicide, and Eve's not buying it. And since the victim is the former head of IAB, Eve and the gang have to look at a ton of bad cops who might be involved, and the sheer amount of bad cops they look at is hard on everyone, especially Eve and Feeney. They both personally knew a couple of the cops they are looking at (Eve knows one "intimately," if you know what we mean), and there's a really great scene where Feeney comes to Eve just miserable about what he's seeing, and they commiserate over a burger from the auto chef.
Eve has a feeling very early on about who could be involved in this murder, so this is one of those books where we aren't shocked by a twist at the end, but follow Eve and the gang along as they figure out how the killer is connected.
Eve also has a run in with one bad cop who has it in for Eve and eventually physically assaults her, even punching her in the boob, which is a very low blow, and by the end of the day, everyone at Cop Central is talking about her boob.
Some really great moments in this book including Jenkinson passing his "Detective Sergeant" test, Eve going for a run on the treadmill using the VR goggles and encountering Zombies, an update on the "Great House Project," and Webster getting a happily ever after.
This book had everything you could want in a really great "In Death" book and we hope you all loved this book as much as we did!

  • Illogical and Unnecessary - Is Eve Psychic?
Jen is not with us for this episode, so AJ and Tara attempt to tackle the subject of whether or not Eve is Psychic. From the comments from our listeners, it's pretty clear that most of you do believe that Eve is in fact Psychic. A few of you (along with AJ) just think she has heightened trauma responses that makes her more cognizant of people's facial expressions and body language.
We talk a little bit about how Nora likes making some of her characters psychic, and most especially, she likes to make her Irish characters psychic. So...is Eve Irish? The last name "Troy" does come from an old Irish word for "footsoldier," so, it's possible that Nora made Eve Irish on purpose? But also...the Irish spelling of that name is: O'Troighthigh (the pronunciation of that word being O'Troy) and Tara is mad about that. It's illogical and unnecessary for that word to have so many silent letters.

  • Weird Ass Book: We Review the Reviews of "Possession in Death"
We've finally made it here to "We Review the Reviews" of "Possession in Death"!!
In this episode, we review TWO reviews by AJ, and Tara plays the part of AJ in this episode! These reviews are very pretentious, and say "Paranormal" way too many times. BUT...they're not wrong, and AJ still stands behind them.
We also have several other reviewers who agree with AJ, so...
One reviewer specifically thinks "Possession in Death" is a "weird ass book," and they're also not wrong.
Even though there weren't a lot of really good reviews for this book, this was a fun episode to record, so, Enjoy!
