In our Facebook group a couple of weeks ago, listener Annamarie suggested we do an episode about Opening Lines and Closing Lines. We thought that was a great idea, so here you go!

One thing that became clear as we did this episode is how often, with her Closing Lines, Nora gives us subtle clues as to how a book helped Eve grow as a character. Why is it that so many people ignore this and keep insisting that Eve never grows.

Tara points out that so many of the book Opening Lines are pretty gruesome, and how those books really shouldn't be suggested as the first book to introduce someone to the series.

Also, Tara likes the Closing Lines where there's some interaction between Eve and Roarke, such as at the end of "Purity in Death," where Roarke tells her: “You’re a hell of a cop.”

No surprise, but AJ really dislikes the Closing Line of "Salvation in Death," because she doesn't understand why Eve is so fascinated and intrigued by Father Lopez.

"Immortal in Death" wins the prize for the book with the Opening and Closing lines that go the best together, and that's why those lines are very popular with readers.

It's a really good episode, and I think looking at Opening and Closing Lines gave us a really interesting perspective on this series.

This week we Review the Reviews of "Fantasy in Death," and these reviews are so judgy, they make us a bit angry. So, you're going to get a lot of rants from us in this episode.

In the first review, we have someone who is upset about Roarke being so "perfect," but then they complain about something Roarke did, (which they misread, btw) so, he's not perfect?

Then we have a judgy "author," who wants to gate keep the science fiction genre, and accuses Nora of not having EARNED the respect due a "real" science fiction author.

There are more people who hint that Nora has a ghostwriter, and those same people want Eve to get pregnant already.

Also one person who "threw the kindle against the wall" because Nora describing how hot Roarke looked in period costuming?? Also one who thought "the final showdown was lame"?? As Tara pointed out: THERE WAS A FUCKING SWORD FIGHT, Y'ALL! HOW WAS THAT LAME!?

But, as with every "We Review the Reviews" Episode, we have several really good ones including an author that actually knows how to write a good review, readers who love Susan Ericksen, People who thought the personal interactions were hilarious and that Peabody was especially funny. We Agree!

This week on the podcast, we talk with Spencer, who is "Intentionally Bookish" on Instagram and Youtube. About a year ago, she did a video about the "In Death" series, and when we saw that video, we knew we had to have her on the podcast!

In this episode, we mostly focus on Roarke and how he has evolved as a character throughout this series. Spencer points out that in the early books, Roarke has an "Alpha-hole Energy," and a lot of audacity. But we all still love him.

At the end of the episode, Spencer answers our fan questions.

This book is clearly about friendship, but it's also about gaming and winning the game. One of the very fun aspects of this book is all of the sword and dick references that Nora includes here.

There's some really great moments, like Peabody asking Eve if she though the penis ever gets tired, and also Peabody and McNab being sent into a Game Con, and them deciding to play a sex simulation game while there, then having actual sex. Because they are Horny Weirdos.

Which Eve figures out the minute Peabody steps into her office when she gets back. Then Peabody distracts Eve by giving her a present: a toy gun that says corny phrases when you pull the trigger.

This book also includes one of the rare times when Roarke gets injured, and Nadine's "Icove Agenda" book comes out, and she dedicates it to Eve.
