Podcast in Death

We go a bit off topic this week and talk about whether or not the "In Death" series is appropriate to give to kids? If not, what book recommendations would we have for young adults. 

 

To help us with this discussion, our special guest is Jen's niece. She is extremely intelligent and a big reader, and she has some recommendations for us for books to give younger readers.

This week we are reviewing "Born in Death!" The one where Mavis finally has that freaking baby!!

This book is about babies but it's also about "Trust." The first victim, Natalie, trusted the wrong person with the information that she had found discrepancies in financial data, and thereby causing her own death. Mavis trusts Eve to find Tandy, Whitney has to tell Eve that "some people" don't trust Roarke with the financial info that they need to look through to find the killer. Tandy trusts the wrong adoption agency.

Also, pregnancy is ghetto!

Anyway...this book opens with Eve and Roarke being emotionally damaged by childbirth classes. After class, they have dinner with Mavis, Leonardo and Mavis' new friend, Tandy who is also pregnant.

Eve is assigned a double murder that involves an accounting firm, and is also dealing with trying to organize a baby shower. Eve and Roarke have a slight argument regarding his involvement in the case, and Peabody is appalled at Eve's lack of Baby Shower Organizing Skills.

Then Mavis' friend Tandy disappears, and now Eve is working two cases...but IS she??

Lots of really funny moments in this book that are just gold!

Summerset is, for some reason, really a dick in this episode. However, he really comes through in the end when they needed him and even lent his wifes wedding ring to Mavis and Leonardo so they can get married in the delivery room before the baby comes.

In this episode we chat with Susan about the "In Death" Series in general. We ask about what books in the series stand out for her, what moments from the series shocked her or made her overly emotional. She tells us why she thinks the dialogue in the series is so good, what characters she would like to see again, and how she sees the series ending.

This week, while Tara is off doing Theater stuff, AJ and Jen decide to talk about Nora's most recent single title release, "Nightwork."

NOTE: If you haven't read this book yet and want to skip this episode, please do so. You won't hurt our feelings. ;)

Right off the bat we can say that we both LOVED it! Both of us couldn't put it down once we started reading it. This book is very much like an old school Nora title, and we couldn't be happier about that. It's got definite "Honest Illusions" and "Homeport" vibes. There are similarities, but "Nightwork" has a vibe all it's own.

Fair warning: the first three chapters hit both of us in the feels so hard, it almost killed us so, thanks for that, Nora. We love you, but f*ck you! (kidding).

Anyway, we go through the basic timeline for this book, giving you our impressions along the way, BUT...we stop before we tell you the end, just in case some of you haven't read it yet.

Then we read your comments on the book. THEN...we give you a very short "We Review the Reviews" where we realize some people just need to Stop Being a Nitpicky Bitch!

If you are a fan of Nora's romantic suspense stories, we HIGHLY recommend "Nightwork"!!

As usual, this episode goes ever so slightly off the rails a couple of times. 

We start out talking about how "Haunted in Death" was part of an anthology, "Bump in the Night," where 4 writers, Nora, Mary Blayney, Ruth Ryan Langan and Mary Kay McComas each wrote a novella around a specific theme. In this case, the theme was  "paranormal," so Nora wrote hers about Eve being assigned a case that involves the ghost of a singer from the 1960's. This morphs into a discussion of how Nora is a bit of a bitch in a good way by calling out people who need to be called out. Then it morphs into a discussion of how women writers, especially romance writers sometimes need balls to survive in the industry. Later, we go off topic talking about a couple of 60's rock stars that were/are garbage humans.

Nora, as we all know is a huge fan of writing paranormal, and though it doesn't really fit into the "In Death" world, we think Nora had a ton of fun writing it. And, at least in this one, Eve isn't possessed.

This is a very short book, but all the things we all love about this series are here, so reviewers can make a checklist to complain about, like Eve eating pizza and she and Roarke having sex.

This book is not one of Tara's favorites, but we think she at least liked it a little bit more after this episode.
