  • Extras for Your Podcast Listeners – PCI 293
Happy Cinco de Mayo! Todd is out and MacKenzie chats with Mike about the come and goings of well known people in podcasting, the failure of Facebook’s podcast integration and how it’s important to provide relevant content and extras for your podcaster listeners — whether that means show notes, blog posts, social media interaction or something else entirely.
Thanks for joining us on this episode of Podcast Insider. Looking to be a guest on the show? Let us know. Emails are listed at the bottom of show notes.
    News

Facebook is getting rid of its podcast integration; effective June 3, 2022.
WTF is a podcast? What a great question.

    Best Practice
    Follow up with relevant content.
By this we mean, post other content on your blog, Twitter, TikTok, Pinterest, etc. If your podcast listeners are interested in your show they’ll probably be interested in related articles, experiences, etc. Create a more loyal following this way.

    Blubrry Pro Tip
    Podcasters vs. Experts

    Question of the Week
Question: I’m struggling with the idea of show notes. I publish a basic summary of each episode but don’t go into detailed show notes. What do you do? Pros and cons? I pretty much do everything on our podcast and to me show notes are just one more thing.
Answer: Keep it simple and keep it routine. Don’t think of it as ‘just one more thing’ but instead as another thing you get to do for your audience and your growth. You get out of your podcast what you put into it. Make a template ahead of the show for the content and let the show notes follow. If you type this out it’s easy to clean it up after recording and then use it for your show notes. Utilize bullets, keywords for SEO and links.

This week, Mike is joined by Barry Kantz and they talk about Twitter, Joe Rogan and a few different legal topics that apply to you as a podcaster. Blubrry Pro Tip
Why people quit listening and two tips on how to get them to keep listening.
    Question of the Week
Question: Someone is using the same title as my show’s title. Is there any way to get them to stop?  I was using it first!

Answer: Unfortunately, there is not much you can do about someone using the same title unless you have trademarked it. Titles can not be copyrighted either. Maybe just contact them and ask if they can change the title of their show enough to make it distinguishable from yours.

  • Narrow Podcasting with Toby Goodman – PCI-291
Mike is joined by Toby Goodman, who runs the Blubrry Pro Production for us. They talked about a lot of things going on in the news and some Blubrry news.  Toby even pre-recorded a Pro Tip and we answered the Question of the Week.  They also talked about his book Narrow Podcasting.  It was a great conversation. The show is a bit longer than normal but it is well worth the listen!

    Multilingual podcasts
Exciting - not so much for Toby - He finds it hard enough translating British English into American English… The news is… Ghost Island Media in Taiwan has launched its first multilingual podcast, 法台漫遊 Balades Culturelles Franco-Taïwanaises, simultaneously in French and Mandarin.      The UK media regulator Ofcom has published the results of its UK podcast survey 2022. It says that 25% of Brits listen to podcasts each month - the same figure as reported in Edison Research’s Infinite Dial UK, and unchanged year-on-year.

The most popular reason to stop listening to a podcast is  first, “I couldn’t find any that interest me.” Second,  “I don’t have enough time.”
"Lots of other Data but a clear reason to narrow down your podcast as far as I’m concerned" -Toby

    Best Practice:
Use your best judgment for how long your podcast should be.

There are plenty of ‘studies’ out there that say 20-25 minutes is the optimal length of a podcast. But, we recommend that you figure out what works best for you, your content and your audience. You probably know your audience better than you think, you’re most likely fairly similar if it’s a common interest show. How long would you spend listening to an episode about your topic? Trust your gut and keep an eye on the Impactful Play and Retention data we provide in our stats to compare and contrast.

Interview: Toby Goodman from Blubrry Pro and Author of Narrow Podcasting!

Question of the Week: Why should I pay for podcast hosting when (insert free host here) is free?

Answer: The old saying, “you get what you pay for” applies here.  But more than that, the “free hosts” out there do not have the features and tools that we have here at Blubrry.  Also, another old saying, “If you get something of value for free, you are the product,” also applies.

    Repeat the important points
It’s beneficial to include a call-to-action in your show notes, but also in the audio content. Just like people need to hear an advertisement multiple times before they move forward with a decision, the same goes for retaining information from your podcast. Repeat the important points to your listeners for better retention.

    Question of the Week
    From Kendra on Facebook
Question: I'm really loving the new “Impactful Play" information on Blubrry. Are there any averages of this statistic? Trying to understand what is a good metric and goal for this number is.
Answer: At this time we do not have an average we can share. Each show is different and as long as you don’t have a huge percentage dropping out before 75%, you are likely good. You have to look at that and decide if something you are doing in the content is causing a drop out earlier.

  • What is Podcasting 2.0? – PCI 289
As always, Blubrry is here to break down the finer technical details of podcasting, this time specifically on what is podcasting 2.0, coming from the Podcast Index team. Once again, we've got big news coming from the Blubrry team; we just released a new section in our podcast statistics that displays your audience survey results. Be sure to stick around to the end where we get into the differences on how publishing works and then served to directories, similar to the discussion with podcasting 2.0.

    Best Practice
Plan your marketing strategy, don’t just wing it
After you publish a new episode you can post it to Twitter and Instagram, etc. but you can’t expect that to automatically grow an audience. Follow up on these posts, see if they’re getting any traction, reach out for engagement, etc. You can never rely on luck for proper marketing.

    Blubrry Pro Tip
    Gaining Trust

    Question of the Week
Question: How long does it take for my episode to be shown on xxx app after I publish?
Answer: It can vary wildly depending on the app or directory. Remember, podcasting is a PULL and not a PUSH. The different apps and directories pull your feed a few times a day at most. The rule of thumb is as follows:
    Apple: 4-24 hours.
Spotify: Normally less than 12 hours.
Google: Once you are in there, nearly instantly if you are using Websub (PowerPress has it) otherwise, 4-24 hours.
Overcast and a lot of other independent apps: As soon as your listener opens the app and refreshes.
Others: Don’t worry unless it’s been more than 24 hours. Most update much quicker than that.
Another tip… If you are having trouble with just one app or directory, first check with that app or directory’s support to see if something is going on.

    Question of the Week
Question: I’m new at podcasting. How do I find interesting people to interview for my show?

Answer: Congrats. The best way is to hang out with the type of people you want to interview. On Forums, Groups on Facebook or in person groups and events around your niche. Also, don’t go into those groups and right away say “I have a podcast, do you want to be a guest?” without participating in the group and being useful first. You don’t want to look like a spammer by coming on too strong.

    Best Practice
Stick with it. Publish enough episodes to foster an audience or following.
One or two episodes isn’t typically enough for a listener to know if they want to stick around regularly or subscribe. We tend to see that if podcasters make it past the 7 and then 15 or so episode mark, they’ll stick with it and the same can be said for audiences.

    Question of the Week
Question: If I want to have a guest on my podcast, do they need to sign a release form or anything legal like that?
Answer: It’s not required, but it could greatly work in your favor to have them sign one, even a simple version. Most likely, all will go smoothly with your guest, however on the off chance that it doesn’t, something like this could assist in any trouble you run into with them. Gordon Firemark, a known podcast lawyer, has a downloadable one on his site.

  • Be the Face of Your Own Podcast – PCI 284
One of the first things that you do when getting your podcast off the ground is creating and/or designing your podcast artwork. It begs the question... do you want to be the face of your own podcast? As in, have your own face on your podcast artwork. It's incredibly popular, but there are no rules when it comes to podcast artwork design - which is shown in each and every podcast directory - that says you should or shouldn't include your latest glamorous headshot.

Toby from the Pro-Production team weighs in on this topic, but not before Todd and Mike get into some industry news, and announcements from Blubrry, including some unsung heroes in podcasting that you might be familiar with.

    Best Practice
Check your bandwidth when recording remote guests/hosts.

Oftentimes podcast interviews are recorded via Zoom or another software that takes up a significant amount of internet bandwidth; which depending on your internet connection, can take a toll on your recording. Check your connection every time before you hit record, and if possible, use a connected option as opposed to wifi.

    Blubrry Pro Tip
The face of your podcast… do you want your podcast artwork to feature your own face?
    Question of the Week
Question: Why does album artwork need to be exactly square and small file size?

Answer: Short answer… because Apple wanted it that way. The better answer is that a square is the easiest shape to use in multiple places, i.e. apps and web pages. It is easier to scale to different sizes without worrying about aspect ratio. The small file size is so it loads fast and doesn’t take up too much space on people’s devices. Not as much of a problem now as it was 14 years ago, the device storage and speed are much much greater now.
