Funding for NPR is under threat in 2025, after Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy have written they intend to “take aim” at funding for NPR and PBS. NPR is one of the largest podcast publishers in the US (and has trained many producers who work elsewhere).
NPR itself earns less than 1% of its funding from the US government; though its member stations earn 14% of their income that way. In 2023, NPR’s total revenue was $318mn, but earned just $32mn directly from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which is funded by the federal government. By way of comparison, in the UK, the BBC’s revenue from government-mandated licence-fees in 2023 was US $4.6bn (£3,660mn); five times fewer people live in the UK than the US.
Eric Nuzum, a former NPR executive, suggests that those at NPR should lead with a concrete vision for the future, rather than take a defensive position.
The BBC published its top podcasts of 2024, based on plays within BBC Sounds, the Corporation’s proprietary audio app. The BBC’s daily news podcast Newscast was most popular, in a year with a UK and US election.
More podcasts are being updated this year: and more often. Livewire’s visualised podcast index stats has data today saying that 243,773 podcasts were updated in the last 14 days, up 2.5% from 237,693 this time last year. Additionally, 852,027 episodes were published in the last 14 days, up 7.6% from 787,243 in 2023.

That used to be a way to get Podnews to play, but now, thanks to Gemini, a bad voice reads news headlines badly. Podnews reader James Hart blogs on how to fix it. A Nest speaker continues to work, until Google breaks that, too.
Mind, Apple has also broken “Siri, play the news from Podnews”; our iPhone tells us that we don’t have Apple Podcasts installed (we do); and our Mac plays something on Apple Music that is not us.

Mobituaries with Mo Rocca is one of the biggest podcasts in the US, produced by CBS News and monetised by iHeart. Yet, depending where you listen, you get significantly more advertising.
We compared the same episode, downloaded from Brisbane, Los Angeles and New York. The ads are marked here in yellow. When downloaded in Australia, you get just two 30” ads (for a gambling company); when downloaded via a VPN in California, the adload was ten minutes 29 seconds (20% of the whole show). New York listeners get even more.
In our second spot break, in California we were served a 2’55” break. Yet, one Podnews reader on the East US coast heard the same episode: they were given a five minute spot break at that point. In total, they were given 18’40” of ads in the same show. Yikes. (Is our reader a desirable audience member, perhaps?)
Oddly, in California the second spot break was exactly the same as the third spot break.
Cumulus Media, the owner of the Westwood One Podcast Network, might be delisted from NASDAQ again, after the company traded below $1 a share for more than thirty days. It’s got until the middle of next year to sort things out, though. It was last delisted in 2017.
Happy Christmas to ART19, which certified to IAB v2.2 podcast guidelines on Dec 23. The IAB requires annual recertification, yet four companies still appearing in the IAB’s list were last certified in 2021 - three from iHeart (Omny Studio, Spreaker and Voxnest); and the German podcast host Audiorella.

Podcasters using affiliate marketing to earn revenue should know about PayPal’s Honey browser extension - which is rewriting your affiliate codes to theirs, so even if you successfully promote a product, if Honey is installed on a user’s machine, PayPal get the commission, not your podcast.
Justin Baldoni’s Man Enough podcast has lost Liz Plank, the show’s co-host, who has announced she is to step away from the show, in a statement. Baldoni has been accused of sexual harassment and a smear campaign, by Blake Lively. The show, which started in 2021, is additionally co-hosted by Wayfarer Studios CEO Jamey Heath, who is also named in Lively’s complaint.

In the UK, Crowd Network has seen revenues grow by over 80% for the fourth consecutive year, the company says. The buzz around the podcast network includes live shows, video-first podcasts, and award nominations.
Is Apple Podcasts getting more popular? Libsyn posted another small increase in share-of-download for Apple Podcasts for November 2024, up to 46.9%. (However, any episodes uploaded as video to Spotify won’t count in these figures, even if only listened in audio form).
Something we didn’t spot at the time: SXM Media withdrew from the US Triton Digital ranker in October. We gather another large publisher is out of Triton’s ranker from Jan 1. Triton Digital is owned by a competing podcast network: iHeart, and in New York, the company moved into iHeart’s offices in November.

How big is the global podcast market? Justin Jackson’s research website has increased its estimates. It suggests that 2024 saw around $3-3.4bn in global ad-sales; that the hosting business is worth around $100-150mn, and that podcast events and conferences are worth $15-20mn. The estimates don’t include YouTube. Sources are given: and it’s open for others to contribute. The IAB estimated US podcast ad revenue at $1.95bn for 2023.
Google has launched a new tool made to “transform your content into AI-generated audio discussions”. And, in much the same way as the company has five different messaging apps, this one is called Google Illuminate AI, which seems to be much the same as another product from the company, Google NotebookLM. Some people suggest it’s a little better; we’ve noticed the voices sound a little different. Meanwhile, in Google NotebookLM, you can now talk to the AI podcast hosts, which you can’t do with the AI podcast hosts in Illuminate AI. There’s a strategy here, if only we could see it.
Talk Easy with Sam Fragoso is to switch from Pushkin to Lemonada Media. It will begin releasing episodes under the Lemonada banner on January 5th.

TuneIn appears to have tuned away from podcasts. After three sets of layoffs, which have not been reported until today, the company hasn’t let creators add new podcasts for the last ten months. It is also not communicating with content creators.
Podscribe has launched a new, real-time podcast ranker. It monitors YouTube as well as podcasts, and offers demographic data, “rising” shows (so you can spot shows that are going viral), and works using both Podscribe’s existing prefixes and campaign pixels. It’s available to Podscribe clients; the company will also release monthly emails with ranker data.
On Air Fest has published more speakers for its Brooklyn event in mid-February. Speakers include Taylor Lorenz, Dan Taberski, and Ashley Carman.

The UK’s Goalhanger has launched its first multichannel ad campaign, in partnership with Spotify.
