The African American vote has become critical in presidential elections, especially in the race for the Democratic nomination. However, there are key moments in the history of the African American vote that catapulted it into such prominence.
On this week’s episode of Poll Hub, Steve Kornacki (@stevekornacki), National Political Correspondent for NBC News and MSNBC and author of The Red and the Blue, joins the discussion. Kornacki dives into a newly released research project conducted by NBC News. Journey to power: The history of black voters, 1976 to 2020. This record is the first that chronicles the black vote for each competitive Democratic primary campaign since 1976. Kornacki explains the evolution of the African American vote in American presidential politics and discusses the implications for 2020.
About Poll Hub
Poll Hub goes behind the science to explain how polling works, what polls really show, and what the numbers really mean. Poll Hub is produced by The Marist College Institute for Public Opinion, home of America’s leading independent college public opinion poll, The Marist Poll. Lee Miringoff (Director of The Marist College Institute for Public Opinion), Barbara Carvalho (Director of The Marist Poll), and Jay DeDapper (Director of Innovation at The Marist Poll) dig deep to give you a look at the inner workings of polls and what they tell us about our world, our country, and ourselves.
This week’s Poll Hub podcast digs deep into the data from our latest national survey. Why do majorities of Americans say President Trump is doing a good job on the economy but say they will definitely vote against him in 2020? The Poll Hub team has some possible answers.
Then, the HuffPo’s (@HuffPostPol) Polling Editor Ariel Edwards-Levy (@aedwardslevy) joins us from Washington to explain why so many pollsters are up in arms over a recent Axios post. The story reported on a poll about how Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Ilhan Omar (D-MN) could spell trouble for Democrats in 2020. The problem is the poll was anonymously leaked and Axios provided no details about how it was conducted, who paid for it, who was polled, or question wording – making it impossible to evaluate the accuracy or credibility of the survey.

On this week’s episode of our podcast, Poll Hub, Jennifer Agiesta, Director of Polling and Election Analytics for CNN, joins the team! Agiesta outlines CNN’s new requirements that polls need to meet in order to receive coverage at the network. What’s changed? What hasn’t? What kinds of polls just don’t make the cut? The Poll Hub team has the answer.
Then, the final word (for now) on the U.S. Census controversy.

On this week’s episode of our podcast, Poll Hub, the post-debate polls!
Two weeks beyond the first round of Democratic primary debates and about two weeks to go until the second, we assess the crowded poll landscape and analyze what the polls mean (and don’t) for the 2020 primary contest.
Then, a recent ABC News/Washington Post poll shows President Donald Trump’s job approval rating at its highest point. But, is the president’s job approval rating the most important metric heading into an election cycle? We discuss.

The United States Supreme Court ruled against including a citizenship question on the 2020 U.S. Census questionnaire. On this week’s episode of Poll Hub, we discuss the significance of the ruling and how it impacts the polling community.
Then, we move onto baseball with baseball aficionado and friend of The Marist Poll John Sparks. In this informative and fun discussion, Sparks discusses the state of the game as the Poll Hub team shares new data from The Marist Poll.
Plus, Marist Poll Head Coach and Newsfeed Media Assistant Alexandria Watts joins the discussion. She offers her experiences collecting in-person interviews with Marist College students. Do these students enjoy baseball? Alexandria has her findings.
Producer’s Note: This episode was recorded prior to the Trump Administration’s announcement that the 2020 U.S. Census would be printed without the citizenship question and subsequent Twitter posts by President Trump.
