This week is The Perks Of Being A Wallflower, a Novel by Stephen Chbosky. We have realized that all of our episodes tend to take on the feeling of the media we happen to be covering that week; this one is no different. We cover PTSD ( Post Traumatic Stress Disorder ) in the Novel by Stephen Chbosky: The Perks Of Being A Wallflower Deep, intense and always serious for this episode, Ryan and Mike break down what PTSD really is, and how a Therapist, like Ryan, goes about treatment.
We learn what kinds of Trauma can create PTSD in a mind, and how recalling those events (triggers) can take a real, and sometimes ugly toll on those that experience this kind of Mental Health Issue Ryan gives us some insider knowledge into treatment, focusing on the method known as EMDR. Ryan shares a story from his past that has some triggers for him as an adult, and how he has learned to use these methods to see his own personal patterns, and make a change to learn and grow from his experiences, both while participating in EMDR training, and the revelations that the training revealed to him. Mike is talking sometimes.

Halloween Special 2018 | Phobias in Stephen King's IT
Ryan and Mike cover Phobias from the 2017 adaptation of Stephen King's IT, as well as some inspiration from the '90s mini-series. They talk about their appreciation for all of the emails and messages they have received from listeners and recount stories about their own personal phobias. Ryan discusses what entails a specific phobia diagnosis and what the treatment options might be for someone struggling with this diagnosis. Mike and Ryan then mix it up this week by playing “Do You Knowbia That Phobia,” an “It” based phobia guessing game of Mike’s own invention. As usual, Ryan rates on a 1 - 5 (clown shoes) scale for accuracy, and Mike rates for entertainment.

13 Reasons Why, a teenage drama centered around a suicide and it's direct effect on the community and the high school in that community, created huge opinions around the nation about it's portrayal of suicide & intervention, or lack thereof. Ryan and Mike dissect and explain what's going on in the show, while informing what to look for in real life when someone is considering taking their own life.
Mike tends to have very strong opinions about this particular TV Series, and it takes Ryan's years of experience as a Therapist to really shed an impartial light on a very graphic depiction.

Mike spends the first part of the episode stumbling over his words and struggling to keep focus. Ryan, the Therapist he is, points out that Mike is having real feelings, and is possibly triggered by the depiction of Mania by Bradley Cooper's Character, Pat.
We learn a lot about Mike's personal struggles this week, and dive deep into the heart of what a Bi Polar person would be like in real life. Also, the therapist in this movie, Dr. Patel, becomes a big topic of discussion, and not always for the positive.
Join us, as we discover new thoughts we had about the portrayal of Bi Polar Disorder in this Movie that we weren't quite aware of before we pressed record. This week on Pop Psych 101

Every Monday, Therapist Ryan Engelstad, and Producer Mike Graham, take an example from Pop Culture (i.e. Books, Movies, TV Shows) that features a Mental Health problem, and determine if the portrayal is accurate and something we can use as an example for those with questions or even curiosity, or if the depiction of the issue is exaggerated and just for entertainment.
Lars, played by actor, Ryan Gosling, has an obvious mental health issue in this movie, and Ryan (Engelstad, not Gosling) thinks it shows signs of Schizoid Personality Disorder. Personality disorders are complicated in that, the person with the disorder, is usually unaware. In "Lars and the Real Girl", Lars believes that a full-sized, plastic doll is a real person, and his girlfriend. Mike has a lot of questions as to the reality of Lars' delusion and how his family, and the community around him, reacts.
Ryan and Mike talk a lot about finding support, and how people would actually react to this in real life. Also, they give us a bit about their backgrounds and how they met, and Mike lets the world know, that he is a sufferer of Mental Illness himself; a person diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder and Major Depressive Disorder. Mike believes things are getting much easier as far as public opinion of Mental Health is concerned, but knows there is a lot of work to do, yet.
It's Mental Health Awareness Week, and the goal of Pop Psych 101, is to aid in the conversation and help normalize it's discussion. As usual, to end the Episode, Ryan rates the portrayal of the Mental Health issue at hand on a scale of 1 to 5, using "Real Girls" as his rating system, this time. Mike rates the movie, as a movie, on a scale of 1 to 5 stars.
