Eating disorders--a subject that hits close to home for Pop Psych 101. Mike, gives a little background to his personal experience with an eating disorder, while Ryan explains that sometimes these symptoms can pair with mood disorders as a way for a person to gain some control where they might feel as if they have none.
Ryan and Mike go deep into "To The Bone", a Netflix special, starring Lily Collins, based on true events surrounding a battle with Anorexia. To The Bone, is as intense a look into treatment as any pop culture they've looked at to date, even if the ending is a little too packaged for Ryan's taste.
Ryan and Mike answer listener questions about bulimia, binge eating disorder, and go over what an anorexic person would look like in real life, as far as symptoms.

Ryan and Mike open up with a discussion about SNL cast member, Pete Davidson, his recent alarming Instagram posts, and the deletion of his social media accounts. Mike tells the story of the rage he directed at a few strangers due to their lack of sympathy to sufferers of mental illness and the words they used to describe, Davidson. Mike, wants people to know that he did not handle that situation properly
They move on and talk about the relationship Mary Poppins has with the Banks family, and the parallels between the film and "Play Therapy"; a type of therapy used to engage children and learn better family dynamics.
They have a new segment called "Unpopular Opinions", where Ryan and Mike take opposite stances on an unpopular opinion about a topic and debate. Ryan decides, Dick Van Dyke's character, Bert, is a better intervention for the Banks family than Mary Poppins. Mike loses almost immediately.

Continuing our streak of Christmas and Holiday episodes, Ryan and Mike break down Scrooge Syndrome / Chronic Embitterment, otherwise known as Post Traumatic Embitterment Disorder. To keep things light, they look at this Mental Health issue through the movie "The Muppet Christmas Carol". The psychology behind Charles Dickens famous character is fascinating, and important to understand and empathize with anyone in our lives that reflect this attitude.
They talk a little bit about their new found reach to the nation, after signing on to broadcast on Dash Satellite Radio. Another segment of "Over-analyzing with Ryan" reveals deep theories about the possibility of Charles Dickens being the Father of modern talk therapy instead of Sigmund Freud who is widely considered to have pioneered psychoanalysis. Quotes from the Movie: Ghost of Christmas Present: If he's like to die, he better do it and decrease the surplus population. Tiny Tim: God bless us everyone. Ebenezer Scrooge: It's all humbug, I tell you. Ebenezer Scrooge: There's more of gravy than of grave in you.

This week, Therapist Ryan Engelstad and Producer Mike Graham, breakdown the accuracy of the portrayal of Malingering (Faking Sick) in the Movie Ferris Bueller's Day off; Directed by John Hughes and Starring Matthew Broderick. Happy to finally be covering an actual comedy we try to keep the episode light. However, being that this subject was picked because of a real life situation, Ryan tries to be direct and explain the why and how of Faking it.

An exciting day for Pop Psych 101. We have our first guest-host, Christine, EMT turned Nurse Practitioner, and Host of the popular Podcast, Antidotes: Stories In Medicine, is joining us to talk about one of the great films in movie history, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest. With insight from Christine and Ryan, we breakdown the myths surrounding Psychiatric Hospitalization, and actually give RP Murphy, a diagnosis fitting for real life; Anti Social Personality Disorder. Mental Health and Mental Health hospitals are important topics for a film like this to get right. There are a lot of accurate portrayals in this film, but one that we decide is just not based in reality, is the portrayal of Nurse Ratched. Mike remains fascinated.

In honor and in reflection of Stan Lee's passing we take a look at a common trope within superhero comics and movies: Grief. While many people throughout the world publicly grieve for this loss, we breakdown Stan Lee's favorite creation and character, Spider-Man, who's stories of grief are weaved throughout the many iterations of our neighborhood friend. This episode has a somber tone, but it is an important message to deliver and the insight and information from Ryan is not only helpful, but incredible. A different take on mental health, we look into the psychology and how to approach the 5 stages of grief, and hopefully get to acceptance. Mike is fascinated

They go on to address the movie of the week which is A Beautiful Mind. Mike has a lot of questions about whether what was portrayed in the movie was accurate or more for dramatic effect when it comes to schizophrenia.
Ryan talks about the diagnosis of schizophrenia, what it looks like, how it is treated, and its impact on the person suffering from delusions and hallucinations and their family. Ryan shares some background information about how the real life John Nash felt about how he was portrayed in the movie and how accurate the symptoms he experienced were portrayed.
Mike and Ryan talk about psychiatric hospitalization and medication and how we have come a long way in regards to treatment from the times shown in the movie. Ryan discusses the high pressure environment of Princeton University and how these environments can contribute to people normalizing poor self care and irrational behavior.
