Fear Level: Spooky (a little scary)
Trigger Warnings: Sexual assault, gore, gruesome murder, gaslighting and manipulation, child death, sexual exploitation, violence against sex workers, general misogyny, the Crypt Keeper

Tales from the Crypt was a big brand in the 90's and they wanted to move from the tv to the box office. Demon Knight was their first attempt. It's fun, funny, and between Jada Pinkett's badass final girl, Billy Zane's zany murder demon, and the deft directing of Ernest Dickerson - they came out with something that exceeded the bro-horror TftC brand. Demon Knight is an action, horror, comedy with lots of shlocky b-movie bits that somehow soars.

• Director: Ernest Dickerson (trailblazing black horror director of Bones, Juice, DMX’s Never Die Alone, and a number of the best tv shows including The Wire, Dexter, The L Word, Treme and the list goes on)
• Writers: Ethan Reiff & Cyrus Voris (Bulletproof Monk, Kung Fu Panda, Russel Crowe Robin Hood, Brimstone ,Sleeper Cell) , Mark Bishop
• Stars: John Kassir (The Cryptkeeper), Jada Pinkett Smith, CCH Pounder, Thomas Haden Church, Brenda Bakke, William Sadler, and the reason we’re all here whether we know it or not, Billy Zane.
• What’s it about?
  • A man on the run is hunted by a demon known as the Collector.

Topics of Discussion:

• These bookends suck
• But the Danny Elfman ass theme slaps
• You can't catch me, gay thoughts
• Demon John Wayne
• Jada doing the most
• Thomas Hayden Church's nipple shock kink
• Victories of omission
• Unfortunate portrayal of sex workers
• CCH Pounder - a one liner machine
• Billy Zane is absolutely glorious
• Boobs and blood, the Tales from the Crypt brand
• Legacy heroes
• This movie needs a sequel franchise

Recommendations:

• The Prophecy
• Devilman
• From Dusk til Dawn
• Demon: the Fallen

Scare Level: Spoopy
Trigger Warnings: Racism, cultural appropriation, racial microagressions

Look out for the horrors of Count Beckula! Hair Wolf is a sharp satire of white appropriation of black culture that cast the appropriations and microaggressions of day to day life in America as a supernatural plague. This movie is an absolute must.

• Director: Mariama Diallo
• Writer: Mariama Diallo
• Stars: Kara Young, Taliah Webster, Madeline Weinstein
• IMDB says: The staff of a black hair salon fend off a strange new monster: white women intent on sucking the lifeblood from black culture.

Scare Level: Spoopy
Trigger Warnings: Homophobia, racism, bury your gays, several homophobic slurs, the n-word (though used entirely by people in the community), blood and gore, potential gaslighting or hypnotism (unclear), one racist ass Dracula

It's time to talk about the original black horror movie about the man himself, Mamuwalde aka Blacula! An African Prince appeals to Count Dracula to stop the slave trade and Dracula rewards him by attempting enslave his wife, turning into a vampire, and locking him in a coffin for a few hundred years. And that's all in the first five minutes!

• The Basics
  • Director: William Crain
  • Writers: Joan Torres, Raymond Koenig
  • Stars: William Marshall, Vonetta McGee, Denise Nicholas
• What’s it about?
  • IMDB says: An ancient African prince, turned into a vampire by Dracula himself, finds himself in modern Los Angeles.
  • This month we’re focusing on horror films with black directors and as far as it goes, this is the classic. William Crain was directing this movie when there weren’t many black directors making movies and certainly not ones that look like this. What’s everybody’s history with this movie?

Scare Level: Scary
Trigger Warnings: sexual assault, attempted rape, blood, body trauma, child death and autopsy, religious cult, flashing lights, animal death, dog death, dead nude child

The definition of a troubled production makes for an interesting if overall disappointing feature, but boy do we have a lot to say about it! If you haven't listened to our episodes on Alien and Aliens, we recommended checking those out first.

Also, is it better for a dog to die horribly or have been erased from existence?
