Progressively Horrified

Fear Level: Spooky/Existentially disconcerting
Trigger Warnings: Blood, guts, violence of a sexual nature, surgery, amputation, hospitals and bad doctors, all sorts of physical trauma, bugs and maggots.

Hellraiser II picks up right where we left off with Hellraiser I. It's bigger, it's weirder, and OH SHIT IS THAT A DIAMOND? It's time to duel your ressurrected evil stepmother or be banished to the shadow realm.

Even if you didn't enjoy last week's movie, Don't Breathe, we hope you at least enjoyed our episode about it!
This week we have such sights to show you, as we make our return to our own personal hells with Hellbound: Hellraiser II with our buddy Elana Levin! We liked that one much better.
In the mean time, enjoy this outtake all about Jamie Lee Curtis, who is not in Freaky, but maybe should be?

We're back!
Hope you enjoyed our episode about Don't Breathe! We didn't!
This week our friend Elana Levin is coming back to talk about Hellraiser II: Hellbound. You won't believe what Jeremy says in this episode that makes everybody else gasp. Eh, you might.
Anyway, enjoy the last of our outtakes from our Velvet Buzzsaw episode!

Fear Level: Existentially disconcerting
Trigger Warnings: RAPE, assault, sexual assault, ableism, dog related violence

Y'all, this is a tough one. Let's put it out there - the third act twist is RAPE. For two acts this movie walks a fine line along the edge of abielism, then it very intentionally throws itself off of a horrible and disgusting cliff.

• Director: Fede Alvarez
• Writers: Fede Alvarez, Rodo Sayagues
• Stars: Stephen Lang (Avatar, Freddy Lounds in Manhunter), Jane Levy (Evil Dead, Zoe’s Extraordinary Playlist), Dylan Minnette (Let Me In, Lost), Daniel Zovatto (Greg from It Follows)
• What’s it about?
  • Hoping to walk away with a massive fortune, a trio of thieves break into the house of a blind man who isn't as helpless as he seems.

Topics of Discussion:

• Chekov's everything
• What the fuck is up with Money?
• Tyler Perry melodrama
• Ableism
• A good movie wrapped in a trashbag full of bricks and dumped in the river
• Third act rape twists: a thesis.
• Disabled people as monsters
• Veterans as monsters
• Happy dogs pretending to be scary dogs
• These very dead protagonists

Hard Candy didn't leave us a lot of room to joke, but there's nothing we can't tied back to Air Bud. Sorry, Disney!

This week we'll be talking Don't Breathe and this is actually one we don't recommend you watch without some foreknowledge. So, maybe listen to at least the beginning of Friday's podcast to determine whether you want to watch it or not.

In the mean time, we absolutely recommend you back and listed to our episode on Scream 2 from last week! TJ was here and we had a ball!

Until Friday, stay horrified!

Happy August!
We hope you checked out last week's new episode on Scream 2 with our good buddy TJ!
This week we're lighting up a movie that's getting a sequel a week after this podcast comes out, "Don't Breathe". We don't get a lot of chances to talk about movies that deal as directly as this one does with disability and it's a real shame that we're going to spend a lot of time talking about different unfortunate aspect of this movie. Check it out Friday.

In the mean time, enjoy this cutting room floor material from our episode about Annihilation with our buddy Vita Ayala!

Fear Level: Spooky (a little scary)
Trigger Warnings: Blood, guts, gaslighting, stalking, harassment.

Two years after the events of Scream, meta-fiction is back and this time it's on its own home turf: college. Can Sydney, Gail, Dewey, and their arsenal of expendable new acquaintances survive the sequel that knows it's a sequel?

• The Basics
  • A little bit about the movie before we start
  • Director: Wes Craven
  • Writers: Kevin WIlliamson
  • Stars:  Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, David Arquette, Jamie Kennedy, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Jada Pinkett Smith, Omar Epps, Timothy Olyphant, Elise Neal, Liev Schriber, Jerry O’Connel, Duane Martin, Rebecca Gayhart, Portia De Rossi, Heather Graham, Tori Spelling, Luke WIlson, Laurie Metcalf, Joshua Jackson
• What’s it about?
  • Two years after the first series of murders, as Sidney acclimates to college life, someone donning the Ghostface costume begins a new string of killings.

Topics of Discussion:

• Sequels
• Bad movie premiers
• Bugs Bunny ass shit
• Jada
• Buffy
• Pacey?
• COTTON!
• IT'S THE 90'S AND WE WON'T LET YOU FORGET IT!

Just because it's a bizarre shared hallucination doesn't mean it didn't happen.

Hope you enjoyed last week's episode on Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight and we were thrilled to have Brad, one of our favorite directors, join us!
This Friday, our good friend TJ Finecey is back to talk about the sequel that knows it's a sequel, Scream 2! See you there and Stay Horrified!

If you haven't checked out last week's episode on Demon Knight, you have to do that right now. That movie is wild!
This week we're wrapping up July and our super sized pride with the sequel that knows it's a sequel. It's time for Scream 2!

Fear Level: Spooky (a little scary)
Trigger Warnings: Sexual assault, gore, gruesome murder, gaslighting and manipulation, child death, sexual exploitation, violence against sex workers, general misogyny, the Crypt Keeper

Tales from the Crypt was a big brand in the 90's and they wanted to move from the tv to the box office. Demon Knight was their first attempt. It's fun, funny, and between Jada Pinkett's badass final girl, Billy Zane's zany murder demon, and the deft directing of Ernest Dickerson - they came out with something that exceeded the bro-horror TftC brand. Demon Knight is an action, horror, comedy with lots of shlocky b-movie bits that somehow soars.

• Director: Ernest Dickerson (trailblazing black horror director of Bones, Juice, DMX’s Never Die Alone, and a number of the best tv shows including The Wire, Dexter, The L Word, Treme and the list goes on)
• Writers: Ethan Reiff & Cyrus Voris (Bulletproof Monk, Kung Fu Panda, Russel Crowe Robin Hood, Brimstone ,Sleeper Cell) , Mark Bishop
• Stars: John Kassir (The Cryptkeeper), Jada Pinkett Smith, CCH Pounder, Thomas Haden Church, Brenda Bakke, William Sadler, and the reason we’re all here whether we know it or not, Billy Zane.
• What’s it about?
  • A man on the run is hunted by a demon known as the Collector.

Topics of Discussion:

• These bookends suck
• But the Danny Elfman ass theme slaps
• You can't catch me, gay thoughts
• Demon John Wayne
• Jada doing the most
• Thomas Hayden Church's nipple shock kink
• Victories of omission
• Unfortunate portrayal of sex workers
• CCH Pounder - a one liner machine
• Billy Zane is absolutely glorious
• Boobs and blood, the Tales from the Crypt brand
• Legacy heroes
• This movie needs a sequel franchise

Recommendations:

• The Prophecy
• Devilman
• From Dusk til Dawn
• Demon: the Fallen
