I spoke with Garland Nixon today about the state of democracy in the west. Why is it so hard for ordinary people to influence outcomes in our societies? Were the things we learned in school about Britain being the home of modern democracy and the House of Commons being the 'Mother of all parliaments' ever really true?

We talked about how decaying capitalist-imperialism needs to keep workers as distracted as possible from their declining conditions by an ever-more hysterical and partisan 'news cycle', which does not actually represent the really important things that are going on in the world and only aims to keep workers 'entertained', demoralised and divided into tribal 'culture wars' groupings.

And we discussed the nature of the state under conditions of capitalist rule, and how that differs under socialism. What is the content of the term 'democratic socialism' and whose interests do the self-identifying 'democratic socialists' really serve? What politics do the Greens really represent? Can politicians like Zohran Mamdani in the States and Zach Polanski in Britain really be as 'anti-establishment' and 'disruptive' as the spin doctors want us to believe?

What is at stake is not merely the future of a few hundred workers, but the question of who should pay for the capitalist crisis. Strikers were blocked some months ago from taking the kind of effective picketing action that would have brought about a quick resolution to the dispute. Court injunctions threatened sequestration of funds and the union caved. The anti-trade-union laws will need to be defied en masse by our movement if they are to be removed from the statute books. While they remain, they will continue to undermine the efforts of workers in struggle.

The ruling class is working overtime to pit worker against worker. We must not allow it to succeed in its aim of neutralising our resistance.

Hyperbolic statements about the ‘threats’ posed by migrants and asylum seekers, alongside blanket media coverage given to theatrical acts of deportation, are being used to stoke social tensions, distract workers from the real cause of their problems, justify militarisation of the police, and encourage scapegoating. All of which keeps migrant workers disciplined and fearful, while simultaneously fuelling the narrative amongst the rest of the working class that migration is responsible for all the social and economic problems they face.

It is not their inability to think logically but their dedication to profit-generation that leads our rulers to destroy public services. Outsourcing is always expensive and often dangerous for passengers and taxpayers. It is certainly miserable and impoverishing for workers. Logic would seem to be in favour of overturning it. Yet inefficient and costly as it is, outsourcing remains an extremely ‘efficient’ method for extracting profit and maximising shareholder dividends – especially when the state is forced to underwrite the operations of private corporations delivering vital services, stepping in to pick up the tab when all possible wealth has been extracted and the vultures have moved on to easier pickings.

The government is doing nothing to protect British industry; workers must take matters into their own hands. Despite all the weasel words from government about saving the British steel industry, the reality is that vast sums have been spent not on preserving jobs, essential skills and productive capacity, but in oiling the wheels of the industry’s slow demise. Rather than rebuilding the industry on a secure and modern footing, the money has gone to bail out failing capitalists and to pay for furloughs and redundancies that blunt the workers’ will to resist what amounts to the most reckless economic and social vandalism.
