Low pay has become such an issue in the care sector that up to 30 percent of vacancies are unfilled. The issue of low pay is at the heart of decaying public health and social care provision in Britain. Privatisation has turned our vital public services into cash cows for profiteers, while delivering less and less to those in need. While the cream of the budget is siphoned off to shareholders and CEOs, the care workers themselves are expected to survive on impossibly low salaries while running in circles trying to fill the yawning gaps left by chronic understaffing. The net result is a demoralised and stressed-out workforce fronting up for a thoroughly inadequate and highly rationed service, which no longer delivers preventive or timely interventions, but doles out what for too many feels like ‘too little, too late’

Common prosperity or common destitution? The drive to war against China must be resolutely opposed. China has made considerable efforts to show the world that its aim is peaceful coexistence and mutual and beneficial development. But the imperialists are incapable of ‘coexisting’ on equal terms in a world populated by free and sovereign peoples. Imperialists need domination in order to maintain their global machinery of wealth extraction, without which their continued existence as a parasitic class is doomed. As their system’s economic crisis gets deeper, their need to regime-change and subjugate China is becoming ever more desperate.

Ever hopeful of rescuing their reputations and keeping a lid on working-class discontent, the fake left are at it again. As with the antiwar movement, so with the anti-austerity movement, what began life as a vibrant and motivated mass movement made up of hundreds of thousands, even millions, of angry workers, has been run into a ditch by the same group of traitors who co-opt the leadership of every struggle and divert it into harmless activities until its participants fade away in disillusionment and disgust. To begin to be successful in organising our opposition to austerity and war, new forms of organisation are going to be needed, and a genuinely working-class leadership created.

If strategic industries are to be saved, their only salvation is full nationalisation and administration according to plan not profit. After decades of the slow decimation of their industry, the mood among Britain’s remaining steel workers is one of grim despondence. Something more than ‘reorganisations’ and cash injections aimed only at buying off the discontent is needed. If Britain is to retain any shred of its industrial manufacturing base, which consists not only of industrial machinery but also of industrially skilled labourers, the relentless drive towards total destruction must be halted and reversed now.
