Hey Winner,
For a while there (a long while), I was setting my alarm for 5 a.m. so I could get up before everyone and start my rigid morning routine. I would do my quiet time in the Word, journal, and then work on my podcast or write until around 6:30 a.m. when I did a short strength workout before my morning run.
Why 5 a.m.?
It was quiet in my house, and activities start at 7 a.m. with my oldest son going to gymnastics practice. If I wanted to get my time in, it had to be then. If I missed a day because I was tired or whatever else, I felt unaccomplished and unproductive. That early morning time really was the main chunk of my day I could dedicate to my writing, after all.
But...
Routines can become stale, especially if they're rigid. I've been going from 5 a.m. straight through the day without breaks or downtime to break it up. And I burned out HARD!
Today I'm going to share with you what I'm doing and why you may want to break a routine you have - it could be good for you :)
Rooting for you ~ Gabe

Hey Winner!
As you may have heard my story, I have struggled with depression in my early adult years and still face the battle to keep my victory. If you don’t know my story, you can hear it in episode 130.
But, one thing I have learned is that just because I struggle with mental health doesn’t mean it gives me an out to what God has called me to. He WILL equip me to follow the path He’s planned, and He’ll do the same for you.
My friend Carla is joining me today to talk about how to walk in purpose and thrive in life even if you face a daily struggle with mental illness. One thing she learned is that she needed to grieve the idea of what she thought her life would be like and accept the way she is to find a way to thrive.
We are not limitless (if we were, we wouldn’t need God, would we?). She shares more about how she accepted her limitations and what that meant for her own success.

Hey Winner,
When you’re going through obstacles alongside your growth journey, I encourage you to keep a journal. Write down the things that are going on. It doesn’t have to be done every day, but when you have an AHA moment or a breakthrough, or when you come across another obstacle, write those circumstances or lessons down. Document them so you can go back and look at them. When you overcome a trial, note the struggle and how you found victory in it.
I promise you, you’re not going to remember all the details and feelings of your journey when you look back on it if you haven’t kept a record of it. It’s important to know where we came from and how we got to where we are now. When we do this, we can help others overcome similar obstacles in their lives and bring them along with us. I kept a journal throughout my entire injury (as you'll see throughout my book when you read it).
In one of my journal entries on March of 2019, I wrote about a follow-up appointment I had with my orthopedic surgeon. On the way to the appointment, I thought for sure he was going to keep me in a boot longer (partly because it took me forever to try walking in the boot). But, you know what? He moved me to a brace to help me stabilize and said he wanted me to start weaning off that, too, as soon as I was ready!
This was progress, and I didn’t remember it until I read it in my journal. Now, looking back on my journal entries, I can see that I made leaps of progress. Had I not written it down, I may not have been able to identify that progress as easily. That’s the power of documenting our struggles and victories.
So what does progress look like, and how do we get going again? These are questions we're going to answer in this episode, so stay tuned!

Hey Winner,
I can still do hard things... SO CAN YOU!
We had quite the adventure hiking Pikes Peak on Saturday! This was my first 14er (and it's totally like a marathon, in the last couple of miles you think you'll never do it again -- today I'm thinking about when my next one will be)...
Today, let's talk about getting mentally tough when we step out into a challenge.

Hey Winner!
It seems strange that, in order for your muscles to get stronger, you need to essentially tear them first. In order to get stronger, that’s exactly what we do each strength training session. We perform our bicep curls and leg lifts in order to create micro-tears in our muscles so that they recover stronger. Over time, as long as you’re working it right, these micro-tears will work together to create a greater muscle mass. You have to break down your muscles so they can grow stronger.
We can adopt a similar concept through our challenges. Each challenge is like a micro-tear; it can feel painful in the moment, but as we recover, if we allow that micro-tear (or pain) to heal properly, our challenge will make us stronger.
Airplanes fly because of the friction in the wingspan. The difference in the pressure above and below the wing creates a force on each that lifts the wing up into the air and allows the plane to fly.
It is curious how a bee is even able to fly, considering its makeup, but it can. A bee’s wings are not rigid; they twist and rotate during flight. The short, quick, and sweeping motions from front to back are what create enough lift to make it possible. Bees need resistance in order to fly.
Just as muscles need to tear to get stronger, and airplanes need friction in order to fly, and bees need resistance to get into flight, we also can’t have victory without a struggle. We grow through the challenges we endure.

Hey Winner!
What happens when you hit a dream come true and have worked so hard toward that goal for so long? I know I’ve experienced a sense of feeling lost or lacking control in those seasons, and sometimes it’s hard knowing what to do once you hit a goal. You hit the summit, so what’s next?
My guest today, Jennifer Whynot, had this experience after accomplishing a massive goal of qualifying for and running the 2021 Boston Marathon. It was so fun to get to meet her in person along with some other mother runners I’ve met on this podcasting journey, and she is the epitome of toughness. The trials she’s faced through achieving the goal, and before and after running Boston are insurmountable. But that didn’t stop her from setting a new burly goal – running a 50 miler!
Her latest experience led her to learn how to create new goals, find mindfulness in running, and break routines to experience more. Today we are talking about all of it!

Frustration comes when we are UNABLE to do what we THINK we should be able to do, and it can hit at any level or under any circumstance. It’s a stage in the journey where we question if it’s worth it to keep going. The thought of quitting seems easier in the moment, so how do we push through and get to the other side of our frustration?
I have 12 ways to push through that frustration and setback and move into your comeback. Let's dive in.

Hey Winner,
Is it possible to turn your obstacles into opportunities? Of course it is! But how do we do this? We do this by seeing our trials from a different angle, taking a different direction, and learning through them.
The first step to turning your obstacles into opportunity is knowing that there is a process to get through pain, and it is never easy nor quick. Today we're going to talk a bit deeper about how to change your perspective in the midst of struggle.

Does gratitude initially come to mind when you face trials? Are you thankful for the challenges you’re walking through right now?
Can I be honest? Me neither… I mean, who wants to go through these challenges? Who naturally is grateful for pain? I know I tend to go into that self-pity, woe-is-me attitude without even thinking about it. Life is hard!
Well, my friend Wendy has gone through obstacles most of us will never face. As a quadruple amputee, she has learned to see God at work in both her battles and her breakthroughs, and today she shares how He can use your hardest seasons to help others create their own beautiful stories.

Hey Winner,
I was on top of my running game, near my peak, after qualifying for the 2020 Boston Marathon. Then a short two months later, all that changed when I accidentally slipped on black ice and badly broke my ankle. I went from having surgery to spending three months completely off my foot, another three months without exercise, and six more months of learning to run again.
I’ve learned throughout that painful process that injury is a form of loss. The grieving process isn’t limited to death; it could show up in any major transition or trying circumstance. As I contemplated writing my latest book, Victory Run: Turning Trials into Triumphs, I wondered how a broken ankle could offer an impactful message, but as I walked out my own injury, I realized the significant changes and transitions it caused in my life.
How we walk through the grieving process is individual to each of us, but when we recognize the stages we are in, it is easier to fight through the pain and get to the other side.
