On our first episode in our year-long #1988Series, we are discussing the legacy of Paula Abdul’s music debut Forever Your Girl. The album landed with a bang launching Abdul’s career into the stratosphere with six Hot 100 hits including four number ones.

1988 was a banner year for Black music. Hip Hop solidified itself as a chart contenter, New Jack Swing was taking over, and classic albums hit the stores. This year-long series will honor important moments in one of the most important years in Black music history.

One hallmark of the 1990s was the, still flourishing and profitable, girl group. On episode #5, back in 2021, we discussed why there aren't any girl groups anymore. For this episode we are remembering those groups that were right there on the cusp of superstardom.

Jade, Nuttin Nyce, Terri & Monica, Changing Faces, The Good Girls, Brownstone and BlackGirl. These groups had hits, and were so close, but it didn’t quite happen. On this episode we have a conversation about it, reminisce about some jams and discuss 90s girl groups that almost became superstars.

This World AIDS Day, DJ Sir Daniel and Jay Ray are dedicating the show to the music that helped educate and inform during the height of the HIV epidemic of the 1980s and 1990s. There is no justice movement that emerges without art, and many musicians turned HIV activists during the most difficult years. Black artists were absolutely on the frontlines demanding money for research and treatment and educating the community.

In the spring of 2018, Ashli would meet the man who would change her life forever. As she slowly sauntered into her place of work, she came across Mashaun and looked curiously and eagerly into his eyes. She didn’t know it then, but standing before her was the man who would become her greatest challenge and unexpected blessing! From that moment on, things would never be the same. From that moment on, they would both embark upon a journey that would birth dream fulfilling opportunities. In that moment, B4Nine was born. 

We like to say that B4Nine is all the things! What does that mean? It’s pretty simple. We are both complicated, but not so complicated, creatives with opinions and perspectives that are unique and often shared by others afraid to express their points-of-view. We are both unapologetically Black and are not afraid to share our opinions and perspectives about all things Blackness, popular culture, relationships, sex, and identity.

Mr. Al Pete is a Hip Hop musician, podcaster, journalist, and the founder of Mister Peterson’s Neighborhood/The MPN Network. Created in 2012, MPN reached instant success with themed ‘warehouse’ parties and the birth of two sub brands: Fly Socks and Tees and The Groove Suite, which was created in 2014. While hosting multiple events, The Groove Suite Podcast was formed to showcase the Neo Soul, Progressive, and other related genres’ music and artists from Jacksonville, Florida and around the United States. In August of 2016, Pete began working with the internet radio station The Sound of Duval by hosting his online radio mix show ‘Cubicle Music Mondays.’ Wanting to expand into the network realm, in January of 2020, Pete created The MPN Network, along with The Neighborhood Podcast Network, which hosts a range of regional podcasts. The network is continuously being innovative and working to tell more stories of various creators of music, arts, and influencers with purpose.

Malika Redmond Biography:

Malika Redmond is the Co-founder and CEO of Women Engaged, a near decade old initiative that develops the civic leadership of Black women, femmes, and girls through year round non-partisan voter engagement and reproductive justice advocacy. She has managed human rights, racial justice and youth empowerment projects both nationally and internationally for over 20 years, including founding the International Black Youth Summit in 1994. Malika currently serves as the board Chair of the ProGeorgia Civic Engagement Table and has been honored by Planned Parenthood SE, the Feminist Women’s Health Center, and as a 2016 distinguished Rockwood Fellow for Leaders in the Reproductive Health, Rights and Justice field. Malika is a global travel enthusiast with a focus on Africa and the African diaspora, a proud alumna of Spelman College, and an adoring mom and auntie of amazing young people.
