Radio Toilet ov Hell

It's time that we sit down and hash out the most important issue of our time: what exactly *IS* post metal? On this jam-damn-packed continuation of our subgenre miniseries, Jordan and I discuss our lengthy experiences in the post metal scene and try our best to hammer some square pegs into round holes. We're talking about looooooooooooooong songs with non-conventional structures and trying to figure out what post metal guys think pop music is. Bands featured on this show include Neurosis, Burst, The Ocean, Cult of Luna, Isis, Pelican, and Jesu (among many others). Folks, it's a good one.

This week on Toilet Radio: We start the show with a bummer by discussing the Brent Hinds’ unexpected passing but we quickly reverse course by talking about a guy beating off at a KoRn concert. James Hatfield wants to sell you high-end Metallica-branded professional construction equipment. Ronnie “The Rat” Radke lost his lawsuit against Anthony Fantano, sued the wrong Anthony Fantano in the process. Finally, Cradle of Filth have done the impossible: they’ve exhausted my appetite for drama. Folks, it's a good one.

This week's show can be summed up in one simple sentence: Duh nuh nuh nuhnuh duh nuh nuhnuh diggidydiggy nuh nuh nuuuuuh. That's right, this week is all about GROOVE METAL. We're taking a chunky riff and making it stank. Join us as we talk about the origins of this now mostly-forgotten phase of metal. We're talking all things Max Cavalera, the godfather of groove metal. We're talkin' White Zombie's white-hot days of commercial success with groove metal. And, of course, we're talking about Pantera getting their pull in the realm of groove metal. Other bands featured include Fear Factory, Nailbomb, Lamb of God, Byzantine, Pissing Razors, and Brand New Sin. FOLKS.... It's a good one.

This week your boys are continuing our safari across the sub-genre plains. We're exploring the prickliest of all heavy metal sub-genres with BLACK METAL. From the first-wave of punk-influenced jokesters to the second-wave of No Fun Club dorks to the third-wave of genre experimentation and beyond. This is all very serious stuff, so I am told. We're talking about Sarcófago, Ulver, Windir, Vreid, Chthonic, Wolves in the Throne Room, and a whole ton of other notable acts in our quest for grim and forbidden knowledge. Folks… it’s a good one.

This week on Toilet Radio: Dave Mustaine announced that Megadeth is the latest in a long line of elderly metal bands to lie directly to our faces and say they're calling it quits. Sure thing, pal! Brett Hinds, formerly of Mastodon, is still watching old Mastodon performances on his phone late at night and commenting regrettable things. Mammoth Grinder is touring and it'll be the last one "for quite some time"? Kirk from Crowbar will need to perform sitting because his back is all junked to hell. The guy from Attila and the guy your 10-year old cousin watches on YouTube are beefing. Finally, Slipknot is selling their catalog for a reported $120 million dollars. How in the world does that make sense? We investigate!

Gather, yon podcast mates, and journey hither toward graven genre battle. This week we're breaking down power metal: what IS it, exactly? When did it evolve from heavy metal into a separate sound? What are the attributes that distinguish power metal from other subgenres? And, most importantly, why is Joe so hostile to power metal? All of this and more answered on this week's show. Bands featured here include Blind Guardian, Dream Evil, Cloven Hoof, Falconer, Paladin, and Hammerfall. Folks… it’s a good one.

It used to be that there was heavy metal and there was hardcore punk and nary shall the twain meet. That is, until thrash metal started making waves and punk bands decided... hey, wouldn't it be tight to use some of these sounds? Enter: Crossover thrash, the cross-cultural event of punk and metal joining up to create the foundation of modern metal. How did we get here? What became of this once-influential subgenre once everyone incorporated the ideas into other sounds? And what was the deal with Fearless Iranians From Hell? We explore on this episode. Bands featured here include DRI, Cro-Mags, Send More Paramedics, Leeway, Municipal Waste, and Power Trip. Folks… it’s a good one.

THIS WEEK ON TOILET RADIO: We're talking about the life, legacy, and final performance of John "Ozzy" Osbourne. Phil Fasciana nearly died in France - Perhaps revenge for the homeless crackhead he claimed to murder years ago? Alex Terrible got the piss beaten out of him at a bare knuckle boxing event, prompting us to ask, “where the hell is your manager?” Bobby Liebling, the funny old man that had a viral video, is having problems touring other countries due to… his past sociopathic criminality? This is the first I’m hearing of this! Our nation’s boomer rockers are leading the charge by ending Summer tours, something I’ve been predicting for a long ass while. Finally, Mayor “Diamond” Joe Quimby declared an official Shadows Fall Day for Springfield. FOLKS.... It's a good one.

Jordan gave me a simple prompt: "How about a show about heavy metal?" and now it has turned into three episodes covering early 80s US heavy metal, late 80s heavy metal, and now, heavy metal across the world through the 1980s. This week we're talking about the Canadian, German, Swedish, Danish, and English heavy metal bands that defined the 80s and cemented a then-nascent sound into the foundations of the music we love today. We got Thor, we got Heavy Load, we got Raven, we got Mercyful Fate, we got Warlock, and we got Helloween. Folks... it's a good one.

On a recent episode we talked about the primitive, early days of American heavy metal. This time we're talking about the juiced-up, oil-drenched, muscle-bound glory days of American heavy metal. The United States grabbed the mantle of heavy metal from Europe and made it louder than ever. Trash and hair metal made waves across the globe, and heavy metal was good as hell. We're talking about some of our favorite heavy metal sounds from 1985 to 1989 with Fifth Angel, Sound Barrier, Racer X, Joe Satriani, Dokken, Liege Lord, and much more.
