Welcome to Glenn Robison’s Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t not tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and ’30s.
Do you know who this jocular fellow is? He’s “The Laughing Trumpeter” Bob Effros and this week’s entire Rapidly Rotating Records show is devoted to him, celebrating his birthday, December 6, 1900. You’ll hear several records with his “maniacal” laughter, recordings of several of his compositions and recordings as a side man, many of them not heard on the show before. There’s also a brief biography and a couple of personal anecdotes about him courtesy of his eldest granddaughter and friend of the show, Barbara Effros. So set aside an hour with your favorite beverage and prepare to be transported back to a different–and we think better–musical era. Click on the player above to listen streaming online and/or download for listening at your convenience.

Do you know who this fellow is? He’s American composer Edmund Thornton Jenkins, being heard on the show for the first time. He was born in Charleston, South Carolina but spent much of his life in Europe. You’ll hear him in the first segment of the show performing “Bull-From Patrol.” This is a “birthday-free” edition of the show so the segment topics have to do with frogs, jail and the universe. November is National Writing Month so you’ll hear all about NaNoWriMo! We’ll also have another episode of “One Thing in Common” where we play a set of rapidly rotating records which seemingly have nothing whatsoever to do with each other, yet have “one thing in common.” There’s lots of great music and interesting information so set aside an hour with your favorite beverage and prepare to be transported back to a different–and we think better–musical era. While you were listening to the original over-the-air broadcast of this show on KISL, I was actually in Rancho Cordova, California where the 37th Annual West Coast Ragtime Festival had just concluded. With having to get ready to travel for the festival, I decided to make it a little easier on myself in terms of the playlist. No biographies or historical events, but each segment starting off with a ragtime piece followed by a couple of pieces about the subject of the rag. There’s lots of great music and interesting information so set aside an hour with your favorite beverage and prepare to be transported back to a different–and we think better–musical era.
