  • A “Lunatic” Edition of RRR #1231 February 18, 2024
    Dan Hornsby

Welcome to Glenn Robison’s Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t not tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and ’30s.

Do you know who this fellow is? No, he’s not a lunatic, as the title of this show might suggest. He’s singer, bandleader, composer and radio entertainer Dan Hornsby. You’ll hear him in three of those roles in the fourth segment of this week’s show. We’ll also be celebrating the birthday of John Burckhardt, as pianist and playing bells. In other segments, we’ll hear from some maniacs, get colorful and try to identify just what belongs to whom. There’s lots of great music and interesting information, so set aside an hour with your favorite beverage and prepare to be taken back to an earlier–and we think better-musical era. Just click on the player above to listen streaming online and/or download for listening at your convenience.

Welcome to Glenn Robison’s Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t not tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and ’30s.

This is the logo of the ICAO. “What in the world is the ICAO?” I hear you ask. The ICAO is the International Civil Aviation Organization.”. On November 1, 1951, the ICAO adopted its phonetic alphabet as a universal standard for communicating English letters over a phone or radio to lower the chance of miscommunication and increase operational safety in aviation. On last week’s show you heard songs representing the first three letters of the ICAO alphabet, Alpha, Bravo and Charlie for A, B and C. Well this week we’re going to continue reciting the ICAO alphabet. We won’t have time enough to get all the way through in this hour, but we’ll come pretty close and besides, I have no idea what record I could use for the letter X, represented by X-Ray. As it is, we’ll be going a bit outside our normal ’20s and ’30s timeline in a couple of cases, but there’s lots of great music and interesting information, so set aside an hour with your favorite beverage and prepare to be transported back to a different–and we think better–musical era. Think you know what tunes I’ll be playing for the various words representing letters in the phonetic alphabet? Click on the player above to listen streaming online and/or download for listening at your convenience.

Do you know who this fellow is? He’s composer and musicologist Peter Schickele and discoverer of P. D. Q. Bach, “the oddest of Johann Sebastian Bach’s 20-odd children.” I’ve been a fan of Professor Schickele and of P. D. Q. Bach ever since high school. and I was greatly saddened last month upon his death, even though his primary focus was not music of the 1920s and ’30s, the first segment is dedicated to him and has a connection to a piece from 1925. If you are unfamiliar with Peter Schickele and/or P/ D/ Q/ Bach, I encourage you to visit the website, www.schickele.com and check out the many youtube videos of their music. In other segments, we’ll make hay, celebrate Fritz Kreisler’s birthday and have another episode of “One Thing In Common.” There’s lots of great music and interesting information, so set aside an hour with your favorite beverage and prepare to be transported back to a different–and we think better–musical era.
