Welcome to Glenn Robison’s Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t *not* tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and ’30s.
I can guarantee that you’ve heard at least one of this lady’s songs. You can see from her necklace that her first name Ann, but do you know her last name? She’s Ann Ronell, composer of “Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?” You won’t be hearing that in Ann’s first birthday segment which opens the show, but you will hear three other of her songs, including one never played on the show before. We’ll also be celebrating Austin J. Wylie’s birthday and in other segments we’ll have a jamboree and find out who loves ya, baby! Some of this music is so hot we’ll even have the fire department on standby. There’s lots of great music and interesting information, so set aside an hour with your favorite beverage and be magically transported back to a different–and we think better–musical era. Do you know who this lovely lady is? She’s singer and actor Jane Froman. (No relation to the fictitious “Sausage King of Chicago” Abe Froman from the movie “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”) She was born November 10, 1907, and you’ll hear a little bit about her and one of her records in the last segment of this week’s edition of Rapidly Rotating Records, all about sharing. In other segments we’ll go missing, take a beating, hear some “always” songs, and we can’t be stopped. There’s lots of great music and interesting information, so set aside an hour with your favorite beverage and be magically transported back to a different–and we think better–musical era. Click the audio player above to listen streaming online and/or download the show for listening at your convenience.
Due to a serious computer failure, this is a “recycled” show from November 12, 2017, but if you’re a new listener since then, it will be new to you. That is unless you’ve perused the archives where you can hear every single show going all the way back to 2000! And if you’re a longer term listener and heard it in 2017, it’s worth another listen! As I work to replace the offending computer, and celebrate the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday with family and friends, the next two weeks will likely feature past shows. Look for a brand new Rapidly Rotating Records show on December 4, 2020.

The gentleman on the sheet music above is Nat Vincent, whose birthday we’ll be celebrating in the first segment of this week’s edition of the show. Nat Vincent co-wrote the lyrics to “I’m Forever Blowing Bubbles,” a huge hit in 1920, but he wasn’t credited under that name. Find out why and who was credited in the first segment of this week’s edition of the show. Nat Vincent was credited for “Pucker Up And Whistle” which you’ll hear performed by the Merry Melody Men. We’ll also be celebrating the birthdays of Glenn Rowell and Joe Sullivan. In the fourth segment we’re going to go on a honeymoon. The portrait above is of Marcus and Catherine Messner and their five sons, Fred, Dick, Bill, Charlie and Johnny. Johnny is the youngest, third from the right. For several years in the 1930s, the brothers all played together in the Messner Brothers Orchestra. When brother Dick retired from the band business, Johnny took over, renaming the group the Johnny Messner Orchestra. On this week’s edition of the show you’ll hear an in-depth biography of Johnny and hear three of the band’s recordings from the late 1930s. The photograph above is courtesy of Johnny’s youngest son, Barry, who is still very much with us and generously assisted with the segment on his father. In other segments, we’ll also celebrate the birthdays of Abe Harris, Jack Mahoney and Sam Theard. And we’ll take a musical stroll down Lenox Avenue.

In the final segment of the show you’ll hear three more of his compositions and a bit about his life and career. To open the show you’ll hear all about Emile Grimshaw and hear three of his his tunes, one even played by Emile Grimshaw’s Banjo Quartet. In bio, I mentioned that Grimshaw began manufacturing high end banjos, guitars and other instruments in 1933, but I didn’t mention that Grimshaw’s company continued to make instruments until 1980 and they were played by some of the most famous musicians in the world. Here’s a link to a page on the history of Grimshaw and the company.
