Normally we try to stay within our stated parameters of music of the 1920s and ’30s. But on this week’s show we’re going all the way back to the 19th century to play an Edison cylinder from 1899! In the first segment we’re going to do some traveling. That will be followed by a birthday celebration for Edwin Franko Goldman. In the third segment you’ll find out everything there is to know about J. Fred Helf, except what the J stands for! After that we’ll wake up and smell the coffee and in the final segment, we’re going to go head over heels.

Welcome to the last Rapidly Rotating Records show. Of 2019, that is! On this week’s show we’re going to hit our stride, we’ll hear from some entertainers, play some little bits of music, stream some music, and enjoy some lollipops.

Whether you’ve been listening since the very first program in 2000, or you just discovered the show this year, thank you all very much. Next week we’ll be starting a new year, a new decade and we’ll once again be living in the twenties! You may have noticed that I sometimes start the intro to the show a little bit earlier into the opening theme song. I do this to keep from having to cut a record from the playlist. Well this week, playing all four records I had lined up for Al Goering’s birthday tribute precluded my playing the opening theme song at all! It’s not like you haven’t heard it, but I hope the opening wasn’t too jarring. Next week I expect you’ll hear the regular intro and theme song. Besides Al Goering’s birthday, we’ll also celebrate Abe Olman’s natal anniversary. In other segments, we’re going to do some crawling, spend some time on the delta and take a musical trip to Savannah. Although I’m not doing a Christmas show this year, I do want to wish those who celebrate a very Merry Christmas and a Happy Hanukkah. I hope at this time of the year, everyone is able to enjoy delicious food, fine drink and quality time spent with family and friends.

This week is a four-segment, all-birthday edition of Rapidly Rotating Records. We’ll be celebrating the birthdays of Gladys DuBois, Bob Effros, Charles L. Johnson and Lew Reynolds. I realized after finishing the show, that I did not back announce one of the records in the Bob Effros segment, “Waiting For The Moon.” It was performed by Ben Selvin and His Orchestra credited as Lloyd Keating and His Music with the vocal by Jack Miller, credited as Robert Wood. At least Johnson and Shirley say it’s Jack Miller. The ARSC Journal says it’s not Jack Miller, but doesn’t offer an identity and at least one other source credits Scrappy Lambert. And apparently it’s not Bob Effros on trumpet on that recording but Manny Klein. I’m not sure where I got that it was Grandpa Bob, but that gives you an idea of the degree of incorrect information out there. I do my best to make sure that everything I say on the show is accurate, but sometimes, it’s not, and when I find out, I try to make correction. Nonetheless, “Waiting For The Moon” is a nice record.
