If you have a child who started to read or has been reading for a little while, it's likely that you have heard of phonics. It's a bit of a reading buzzword and it can cause a divide, as there's a bit of jargon that's thrown around with it.
It's likely to be a different way of teaching reading compared to how you may have learned to read. This episode is a quick start guide to help you with the terms you actually need to know and how you can help your child's decoding for reading

You are being told to read your child, but want to give them a chance to show what they can do and become an independent reader. It's likely that you've been reading to your child for a while, but then it changes once they are starting to learn to read.
You don't want to overhand hold them but you also want to make sure that you are still modeling and still showing them how they can become a reader.
When your child's starting to read you are going to want to keep reading to them, but when should you let go, and should you keep doing read-alouds to help your child's development of their skills?

When your child starts learning to read, they will go through a journey.
They'll go through lots of different milestones as they go on that journey. Sometimes you might see that their friends or their peers are going quicker than them and sometimes slower than them. But they are all on their own unique individual journey.
As part of working out where they are on their journey, we need to follow teaching cycles to continue to review where they are at and create progress. Focused instruction creates the biggest impact and progress for their reading.

I'm going to be sharing with you a little hack that I learned a few years ago. I have used it with all my students and it really was amazing how much it changed their reading, particularly the children who were struggling.
It changed how they were approaching reading and their attitude to reading.
Most of the time when we are reading with children, we are usually looking for fiction books. But, they do need a mix of fiction and non-fiction books.

If you have sat with your child at the early stages of reading and you hear this, " the c-a-t cat s-a-t sat o-n on the m-a-t matt'. You will get excited that they are reading. But wow, It's taken them four minutes to do one sentence! Yes. We know you need some patience. Yes. We know they're going to get there. But it might not ever get to the point that they will be able to answer questions in an exam.
It takes a lot of patience in the early stages. They will become fluent readers and it's amazing how quickly they will get there thinking big picture. In this episode, I talk about going from learning to read, to reading to learn.
All children will make this transition at some point. And the first thing we're gonna talk about is actually what we call the simple view of reading.

There's so much that goes into reading. I know that lots of people get confused and there's lots of jargon that gets thrown around.
But the ultimate goal that we all have is that we want children to be able to easily learn to read and understand what they're reading. So that they can be successful in their education and then in their life. Reading is a big deal. It's become such an integral part of all of our daily life. I highly doubt there’s been a day where you haven't done any reading recently.
It’s such an important part of our life.
I think we do get a bit worried that if our child is starting to show signs that they're falling behind, it could impact them long-term.
Let’s navigate this and help you not to worry. At the end of the day, your child is likely to get there. They will get there in their own time and with a little bit of guidance and they will succeed with their reading.
With much going on in reading, we sometimes get overwhelmed and confused by all the different things we're doing.
We cut often hear there's this thing called phonics, which might sound a little bit different from how we learn to read. It’s likely we can't even remember how we learn to read because it's so long ago and we just do it automatically now!
In this episode, I'm going to go through one of the models which can help simplify this.
There are several different models, but I quite like this one as a starting point. There are five pillars that will help us to understand what is going on with reading.
