  • Managing Everyday Stress

Stress. It is unavoidable. A series of events these last few weeks (mainly due to traveling), have left me contemplating how we get better at managing everyday stress. Rathers than try and avoid stressful situations (you'll hear me explain more about this in the podcast), sometimes we need to focus instead on:

    1. Recognising the signs of stress.

    2. Work through the emotion of stress, releasing the energy and intensity in a healthy and resourceful way.

    3. Understand why we are stressed and use it as an opportunity to learn and grow.

As always I would love to know what you think.

  • We need to meet in the middle.

The importance and awareness of the need to prioritise and build capacity around teacher wellbeing is growing, and it's great to see.

More time, more people, more strategy.
As we head down this path one thing I am very mindful of is making sure we offer and provide long-term strategies that are going to make a difference both personally and professionally.
Teacher wellbeing is a collective responsibility. We need to tackle it from both ends, both personally and professionally, on our own, and together.
This means making sure the time you give to teacher and staff wellbeing needs to be well thought out, and the strategies implemented allow both the everyday and workplace aspects to meet in the middle.
Yes, let's give time to teachers and staff to engage in PD and build their wellbeing literacy, knowledge, awareness, and capacity, but let's also build our awareness around what can be done at a whole school level to support teacher wellbeing.
We need to build a culture of seeking and speaking, start to ask questions regarding how we work and if it supports staff wellbeing, and be ready to make changes to ensure we have better ways of working, improved systems, structures, and processes, psychological safe working environments, and collaborative, engaged teams.
If we don't approach this from both ends, and instead offer 1-day PD's to build teacher wellbeing, without being prepared to tackle what contributes to stress factors in the first place, I am worried we will find ourselves having ticked a box, but not actually addressed systemic issues that need long-term, sustainable change.

  • 3 things I have needed this year: hope, compassion, and efficacy.

Hope, self-compassion, and self-efficacy; this is what this year has been built on for me.

Hope that I can make a difference and that it will actually happen, hope that people will buy my book, and hope that my message will land and inspire others.

Self-compassion for where I have been, where I am, what I have experienced, and what I bring to now

Self-efficacy and belief that my work is needed, that it's worth sharing and that people will want more.

These 3 things have underpinned my year, from working full time to running my business, to writing and publishing a book. Without hope, compassion and efficacy, I doubt I would have made this year happen. I also have hope, self-compassion, and efficacy for 2023, another year where more amazing things will happen. I hope you are ready for it!

  • 2 things getting in the way of improving workplace wellbeing.

Do you share with your leaders what is getting in the way of your wellbeing and how they can help you?

Do you ask your staff what is impacting their wellbeing?

These 2 things are essential to improving wellbeing but are often unknown or misunderstood as key steps in the improvement process.

  • Burnout, meaning, and moving past the pandemic.

This episode was a blast to record. Valerie and I talked about burnout, meaning, connection, and working on our own wellbeing. This is a great conversation and a must-listen if you are wanting to move past the pandemic and onto a more proactive and fulfilled way of living.

    About Valerie:

Valerie Ling is a Clinical Psychologist and the Founder of 3 businesses with a common vision - a world without burnout.  Valerie works with leaders and organisations to implement burnout proof plans at an individual and systems level.  Her three businesses are a psychology and wellbeing practice in Sydney (Centre for Effective Living), a Workplace Wellbeing consultancy (Centre for Effective Serving) and her coaching business for Private Practice Leaders.  Most recently, Valerie worked with the Department of Education in Tasmania after the tragedy at Hillcrest Primary school as part of a workplace recovery plan.  Get a free copy of her e-book: My Burnout Prevention Plan here: https://bit.ly/valeriebook

  • When You're In The Thick Of It

Have you ever been in the thick of it? Oh, what a place it is to be!

The past 12 months or so for me have been a series of being in the thick of it, from redundancy to changing jobs, to writing a book and now having a business. What a journey.

This episode shares what it means to be in the thick of it, and how we can use this experience to ideate and dream rather than continue to be pulled down.

  • Change Doesn't Have to Be Slow

Last week I dropped by to talk about rest, how to prioritise it, and the struggles that may come with it. So many of you got in touch after this and shared your own stories about learning to prioritise rest. If you didn't catch the episode you can listen here.

What stood out was how many of you talked about change. Change in mindset, change in activities, change in how you went about your day. Many of you shared that change took time, was hard, and some of you have shared that you don't even know where to begin.

This week, I thought I would talk about change. Change is a big topic and one we need to explore as we look at improving wellbeing. All improvement comes with change, but we often neglect this crucial piece of work.

We need to understand the change process and management process for ourselves and for those we work with.

Change doesn't have to be hard, slow, or take time. Thinking this way can also impact our approach to change and the improvement we make.

Check out this episode for more insight into change and how you can make it work for you.
