Revisited

It is a sobering statistic: eleven deaths at sea in ten years. Along the coastline of France's Reunion Island, surfers, but also swimmers, are regularly attacked and sometimes killed by sharks. For the island paradise, it's a problem that's causing major concern for the surfing community and the tourism sector. Our reporters Clovis Casali and Julien Sauvaget went to the French overseas department in the Indian Ocean to find out what's being done to shake off its "Shark Island" image.

Our reporters returned to the city of Bouaké, in Ivory Coast, which was held for 10 years by the northern rebellion during the First Ivorian Civil War. This metropolis, located in the centre of the country, now wants to move on from years of conflict and ditch its label of "rebel city".

In this edition, we explore the tragic story of France's "stolen children". Between 1963 and 1982, more than 2,000 youngsters were taken from Reunion Island, in the Indian Ocean, to repopulate rural areas of mainland France. Some were orphans, but others had parents who signed release papers, not always understanding they would never see their children again. Our reporters followed three sisters on an emotional journey back to their native island in search of answers.

More than a decade after ten terrorists from Pakistan brought India’s financial capital Mumbai to a halt for nearly sixty hours, our team revisited the metropolis. In January 2018, French Prime Minister Édouard Philippe announced the government was scrapping plans to build an airport at Notre-Dame-des-Landes, a small village in western France.
