In the 1990s, just after the fall of the Berlin Wall, the former East Germany experienced a wave of far-right racist and political violence. In Germany, this period is known as the "baseball bat years" – a dark period that still haunts the country today.
One of Europe’s biggest state secrets – and a scandal that still shakes Italy today – was a clandestine army set up by NATO after World War II to block the spread of communism. During the Cold War, cells of the network operated in around ten European countries. In Italy, the covert operation was known by the code name Gladio. Natalia Mendoza, Tommaso Marro, and Laura Roudaut report.
Eighty years ago, Moldova was struck by a famine that killed more than 150,000 people. Long shrouded in silence, this episode remains a blind spot in the country's history. But gradually, survivors' accounts, combined with the work of researchers, have shed light on a tragedy largely orchestrated by the Soviet authorities of the time. FRANCE 24's Maria Gerth Niculescu and Bastien Renouil report.
Nearly 80 years ago, a brutal crackdown on Jeju Island in southern Korea claimed tens of thousands of lives. In the aftermath of World War II, the Korean peninsula was drawn into the Cold War and divided in two: a Soviet-backed regime in the North, and a US-supported nationalist government in the South. On Jeju, some residents resisted this division, and the South Korean government soon branded the island a communist stronghold.
Hundreds of thousands of people in Aden, in southern Yemen, are calling for the return of the pre-1990 state of South Yemen, creating a gaping rift with the legitimate Saudi-backed government. Led by the Southern Transitional Council (STC), this desire for independence is hampered by a brutal reality on the ground: the country is plagued by gas shortages, a stalled economy and a healthcare system in dire straits. FRANCE 24's Mathilde Delvigne reports.
Twenty years after the 2006 migration crisis, the Atlantic route between Senegal and the Canary Islands remains one of the most dangerous for migrants. In 2024, more than 10,000 people died or went missing there. With most victims dying anonymously, families and associations are trying to give them a name. FRANCE 24's Sarah Sakho and Simon Martin report.
In the space of one year, US President Donald Trump has signed hundreds of executive orders. He has ordered mass deportations, cut thousands of federal jobs, launched a trade war and withdrawn the US from major international institutions and agreements. How has his first year back in power been perceived at home? Are his Republican Party and his MAGA base still fully behind him? Our correspondent Matthieu Mabin reports.
Eighteen years after the scandal of false African adoptions involving the French NGO Zoe's Ark, many of the Chadian victims are still fighting for compensation. FRANCE 24's Harold Girard and Fadile Bhayat report.
It's a conflict that has raged for 40 years – and cost the lives of 40,000 people – but could now be coming to an end. Since the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) militant group announced its dissolution and the end of its armed struggle with Turkey, the population of Diyarbakir, a Kurdish city in southeastern Turkey, has been waiting. The Kurds have long hoped for peace, but under what conditions can it truly be achieved? And is a lasting peace even possible? FRANCE 24's Jenna Le Bras and Adrià Rocha Cutiller report.
A decade after the Paris terror attacks that left 131 people dead and more than 400 wounded, the Belgian district of Molenbeek is trying to reinvent itself. The Brussels neighbourhood where several of the terrorists grew up is seeking to turn the page, while facing ongoing social and security challenges.
