Rising From The Rubble episodes

  • I Didn’t Stop… Until My Body Did And That Saved Me

If you keep giving… eventually, your body will make you stop.

In this episode, I’m talking to Karen Bashford about what happens when life pushes you to your limits — and how a nervous breakdown became the turning point she needed.

Karen grew up feeling unloved, experienced challenging relationships, and spent years giving everything to everyone else. She tried books, courses, and self-development, but nothing worked — until her body forced her to pause.

We talk about the lessons she learned in those moments of collapse: listening to yourself, setting boundaries, and finding the love she’d been searching for all her life.

If you’ve ever felt drained, unseen, or unsure how to put yourself first, this episode shows that sometimes hitting the lowest point is exactly where your rise begins.

Now, grab a cuppa, relax and press play.

    About Karen

Karen Bashford is a coach, mentor, speaker, podcast host, author, and founder of the KB Method and The Sloth or Beaver Coaching Tools®. She brings a deeply human approach to conversations about connection, resilience, and navigating life’s more difficult moments. Drawing on lived experience and years of working alongside others, Karen shares practical insights with honesty, warmth, and humour.

Her work invites people to pause, reflect, and deepen their understanding of themselves. She encourages exploring how childhood experiences continue to shape patterns, reactions, and decisions in adulthood, often influencing confidence, boundaries, and relationships without conscious awareness. Through Sloth or Beaver Tools, her mentoring, writing, speaking, and podcast, Karen creates safe spaces for courageous conversations that challenge self-limiting beliefs and inspire personal responsibility.

With compassion and clarity, she supports individuals in reconnecting with their inner strength, making empowered choices, and leading their lives with greater intention and self-trust.

  • Curiosity, Courage, and an Unconventional Career

If one door closes… it doesn’t mean your story is over.

Sometimes it’s the very thing that puts you on the path you were meant to follow.

In this episode, I’m talking to Penny Hopkinson about what happens when life doesn’t go to plan and why that doesn’t have to be the end of the story.

Early in her career Penny was fired.

    More than once.

She also didn’t have the qualifications people often say you need to succeed.

Many people would have taken that as a sign to stop.

    Penny didn’t.

Instead, she followed her curiosity, developed her craft, and built a career in journalism that took her across the Middle East, reporting on the development of countries that would go on to become global powerhouses.

In this conversation we talk about resilience, building trust, and why your life experience can matter just as much as the letters after your name.

If you’ve ever felt like you’ve hit a brick wall, or questioned whether you should keep going, this episode is a powerful reminder that sometimes the rubble is exactly where you rebuild from.

Now, grab a cuppa, relax and press play.

    About Penny

Penny Hopkinson is an operational governance specialist with nearly 40 years’ experience helping growing organisations protect intellectual property and scale with clarity.

She is an Amazon No 1 bestselling author of Manual Magic: Create the Operations Manual Your Franchisees Need to Succeed, endorsed by the British Franchise Association, and a contributing author to Amazon No 1 bestseller, The AI Edge: How to Thrive Within Civilization’s Next Big Disruption (2026), alongside 34 global experts examining the future of artificial intelligence.

As founder of Manual Magic AI®, a governance-first SaaS platform built on her three-step methodology, Penny focuses on one critical issue in the AI era: how organisations prevent operational chaos as technology accelerates speed.

Her work bridges governance, intellectual property protection, and scalable operational design.

  • If you want things to change, you have to change the way you do things

If you want things to change, then you need to change things.

    Not someday.

    Not when life calms down.

    Now.

In this episode of Rising from the Rubble, I’m talking about living intentionally and why doing more isn’t the answer. Changing how you do things is.

So many of us move through our days on autopilot, reacting to whatever comes next, wondering why nothing feels different.

    I’ve been there.

    Mainly sitting in being busy.

    And tired.

    Hoping change would just happen.

In this episode, I break intentional living down into two simple, practical approaches.

This isn’t about rigid routines or adding more to your to-do list. It’s about making conscious choices so your days actually reflect the life you want to build.

If you’ve been feeling stuck, frustrated, or quietly thinking there has to be more than this, this episode will help you pause, reflect, and start doing things differently, on purpose.

  • Be aware of the red flags, because they don’t go away

Sometimes we see the warning signs early on.

    We notice them.
Then we talk ourselves out of them.

In this episode, I’m chatting with Helen Goad, and she shares her story of leaving a relationship that lasted more than 20 years. As if that wasn’t enough to deal with, not long after, she also lost her mum. Life really didn’t hold back.

Helen talks honestly about the red flags she noticed along the way. The ones she ignored. The ones she hoped would change if she just kept going. If you’re thinking “this feels familiar”, you’re not on your own.

This is one of those conversations where you might catch yourself nodding along, maybe feeling a bit uncomfortable, maybe feeling seen.

If you’re listening and quietly questioning your own situation, this episode is for you. No judgement. No telling you what to do. Just a real conversation that might help you look at things a little more clearly.

  • Don't Leave It Too Late

Sometimes we stay in situations far longer than we should.

Fran knows this all too well.

She lived alongside her husband while he battled PTSD, giving decades of her life to support him. She loved him, she cared, she tried everything. And yet, there came a point where love alone wasn’t enough.

In this episode, Fran shares her story with honesty and a little bit of heartache. She talks about the tipping point, the moment when enough finally felt like enough, and how stepping away didn’t mean she had failed; it meant she had chosen herself.

If you’ve ever felt drained, overlooked, or torn between loyalty and your own well-being, this conversation is for you. We talk real-life choices, tough love for ourselves, and why waiting too long can cost you more than you realise.

Fran’s story is a reminder to listen to yourself, trust your instincts, and act before it’s too late.

    About Fran

Fran was born in the UK and trained as a nurse at UCH, where she eventually specialised in Ophthalmics at Moorfields Eye Hospital. She then moved to Hong Kong to work in the Vietnamese refugee camps with YWAM (Youth With a Mission).

Whilst there, she also helped people detox from heroin and set up a rehab house. Then she moved to Australia to help refugees settle into their new country.

It was there that she met and married her husband and had 3 sons. Sadly, they are now divorced, and the three young men are living in 3 different countries!

Fran is now a proud grandparent to almost 3 grandchildren!

Now back in the UK, Fran is a Trauma Counsellor, one of two TRTP (The Richards Trauma Process) practitioners in the UK. She lives in Suffolk and loves to walk her dog on the beach. She volunteers in one of the local charity shops, as well as counselling online.

  • It’s the hardships that made me who I am today

Ever met someone who proves that your starting point never gets to decide your finish line?

That’s exactly what this week’s conversation delivers.

In this episode, I had the opportunity to speak with the resilient and talented Kenny Archer. A man who grew up hearing he wasn’t good enough, on repeat, like a terrible soundtrack no one asked for.

For years, he believed it until he realised the truth: he’d been living in someone else’s script, and it was time to write his own.

    That shift changed everything.

If you’ve ever felt like you’re dragging old voices around with you, if you’ve ever wondered whether you can rise from the version of you that someone else decided you were, this one’s for you.

Let Kenny’s journey remind you of something I already know you need to hear: you’re capable of far more than the world ever told you.

    About Kenny

Kenny Archer is a business coach, creative strategist, and former retail executive with nearly 30 years of leadership experience.

From transforming brands to navigating personal setbacks, his journey is rooted in resilience, reinvention, and real-world results. After a successful corporate career, including growing profits by 660% and launching one of Southern Africa’s most disruptive retail brands, Kenny transitioned into coaching to help others align success with values.

Today, he runs Archer Inspirations alongside his daughter, supporting entrepreneurs and leaders to build businesses that feel as true on the inside as they look on the outside. Known for his emotional intelligence, creative insight, and no-BS approach, Kenny helps clients break patterns, gain clarity, and lead with purpose.

When he’s not coaching, you’ll find him exploring with his wife, cheering for Manchester United, or enjoying life’s simple joys.

  • You either duck to avoid it or swing to hit it

Ever had life throw something at you and your first thought is, this isn’t how it’s meant to be?

You know that moment where everything seems steady, then out of nowhere you’re hit with something you never imagined would land on your doorstep.

The kind of thing that makes you pause, breathe and wonder how on earth you’re supposed to hold it together while still pretending you’ve got some sort of map.

In this episode, Cat Woolrich talks through the joys of becoming a first-time mum, then discovering her baby was born with a rare genetic disorder.

She speaks with a level of honesty that helps you understand what it’s really like, sharing what those early days looked like and how her journey into motherhood nudged her into creating a business she never expected to build.

This episode is for you if you’ve ever stood in the middle of a life you didn’t plan and thought, right… I need to find my feet here.

Cat’s journey shows what it looks like to meet a reality you never saw coming, learn as you go and discover strengths you didn’t know you had. Her story isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about finding a way forward, one honest moment at a time.

    About Cat

Cat Woolrich is a strategic marketing consultant and the founder of Nine Yard Marketing, based in Cheshire. After more than a decade in senior agency roles, Cat was thriving in a career she loved, until life changed direction when her little boy was born with a rare genetic disorder. Balancing the demands of agency life with being a full-time carer proved impossible, and she knew something had to give.

Cat now works with growing brands to bring structure, clarity and strategy to their marketing, while building a career that aligns with her values and her family. Her journey has reshaped how she defines success. Proving that ambition and balance can coexist, and that meaningful work doesn’t have to come at the cost of wellbeing.

  • Why me? Why now? What have I done to deserve this?

Ever had one of those moments where you look up at the sky and think, “Seriously? Why me? Why now? What on earth did I do to deserve this?”We’ve all been there.

In this episode, I sit down with the brilliantly honest Iain Girling, who knows that feeling all too well.

Iain found himself unceremoniously fired. No fanfare, no warning, just… out. One minute he’s part of something, the next he’s standing there wondering what just happened. From that rubble, he had to decide whether to crumble or rebuild. During our chat, he shares how he went from corporate exit to carving his own path as a sole trader, and the lessons that came with it.

If you’ve ever been knocked off your feet and thought, “This can’t be how it’s meant to go,” this one’s for you. Because sometimes the very thing that feels like the end is actually the beginning — it just doesn’t come gift-wrapped with a bow.

Now, grab a cuppa, relax and press play.

    About Iain

Born in Essex in 1948, Iain is a Baby Boomer who grew up with all the parental love an only child could want, but none of the grandparent stories, as all of his had all passed away before his sixth birthday.

Entrepreneurship coursed through his veins as both his grandfathers were successful entrepreneurs, and he’d eventually follow that path himself.

He is the husband of Ann. A former solopreneur who thrived for 25 years after micro-managers showed him the door. A keen traveller. He is also a firm believer that any proper walk should end at a pub serving craft brewery beer.

    His memoir, Speaking My Mind:

My Life as a Baby Boomer, chronicles 63 years of real life, proving that even someone who hated English at school can become a storyteller.

He is working on his debut novel, weaving together decades of life events into the story, characters and places in the book.

  • I just couldn’t deal with ‘This is it’

You know that moment when you suddenly realise you’re spending all your time making someone else rich… and you think, hang on a minute – what about me?

That’s exactly where Charlie Clarey found herself.

After years of working her socks off to build someone else’s dream, she hit that point of no return. You know the one — where your soul just gives you the look and says, “Enough now.”

In this episode, Charlie shares how she went from being fed up with working for “the man” to taking the leap and building something that’s hers.

We chat about what it really takes to walk away from security, the messy middle of starting over and the unexpected freedom that comes when you finally back yourself.

If you’ve ever sat at your desk wondering if there’s more to life than this, or caught yourself daydreaming about doing your own thing, this one’s your sign. Charlie’s story might just give you that nudge you’ve been waiting for.

    About Charlie

Charlie is a marketing simplification strategist and she helps high-performing women step into the next level of their business with a clear strategy, deep alignment, and the confidence to flourish on their own terms.

She spent 20 years in corporate marketing working for huge brands in a range of industries from pubs, restaurants, cinema, retail & global electronics.

But she left that world because she was sick of making rich companies richer (and being told what to do by white middle-aged men!).

Now she focuses on helping female founders with their marketing by building a strategy that works for them, that is fun and that generates more money in the hands of brilliant women.

What if the thing your child is going through feels too big to even put into words?

The kind of thing that makes your heart ache in a way you didn’t know it could.

In this episode, I talk to the incredible Sally Panks, who opens up about her experience of discovering her daughter was self-harming at a very young age. Sally shares what those first moments were like, how she found her footing when everything felt shaky and how this led her to help others.

If you’ve ever found yourself thinking, “How do I even begin to deal with this?”—this one’s for you. We talk about the guilt, the confusion, the endless questions and what it means to show up for your child when you feel like you’re breaking too.

    About Sally

Sally is a mother of two and founder of S&L Self-Harm Distraction Kits, which is a dedicated not-for-profit organisation focused on providing essential support for children, young people, and adults who struggle with self-harm.

Their mission centres around offering distraction kits that employ the "Delay and Replace" strategy, effectively encouraging safer coping mechanisms and emotional regulation. Each kit is thoughtfully curated to include various tools and resources that promote relaxation, mindfulness, and healthy distraction techniques.

Recognising that individuals, as young as eight years old, may resort to self-harm as a means of coping with difficult emotions, they aim to deliver these kits to schools and community settings. By empowering individuals with practical resources, they strive to interrupt the cycle of self-harm and foster a culture of support and healing. Through donations and community partnerships, they work tirelessly to provide these kits at no cost, ensuring accessibility for those in need.
