Paul prays for the recipients of this letter to know God better.  Too many Christians walk around insecure, overwhelmed by the opinions of the world, fearful of the future, or aimless in their purpose.  Those who are in Christ have been given so much by God (adopted, chosen, ransomed, power, inheritance, etc) that should launch us into a life of security and meaning.   In this section, Paul gives us a few descriptions of Jesus to help us know Him better.

Jon Landis preaches a sermon from our Treasuring God Series entitled "Treasuring the Cross."   We don't like difficulty or hardship.  We'd prefer to skip the tough stuff and get the results.  Suffering for following Jesus is often unwelcome, and unsettling.  We love the idea of being saved from our sin and enjoying the victory that Christ brought via the cross.  Before Jesus went to the cross  he showed us how to live.  That way was not easy and was marked with the expectation to deny ourselves and carry our cross daily.  Following Jesus was not easy.  This sermon appeals to us to treasure not only the victory the cross brings but the hardship and suffering following Jesus can lead to.

Jesus is our good shepherd (John 10:11) and lays his life down for the sheep (us.). We stray and look for "greener grass" all the time, and subsequently struggle to believe and trust that God is leading and caring for us.  We often wrestle with a mindset of scarcity and make decisions out of the fear that there wont be enough.   Psalm 23 provides a look into a heart at peace and a soul that treasures their shepherd.    How do learn to Treasure the Shepherd? To love to listen to his voice and find ourselves at peace even as we walk through the valleys?   It begins by knowing how much the Shepherd treasures us!  (John 10, Luke 15, Psalm 139, 1 Peter 2, 1 John 4, etc)
