Sadler's Lectures

This lecture discusses key ideas from the 19th century Utilitarian philosopher John Stuart Mill's work, On Liberty

It focuses specifically on one of Mills' lines of argument about why opinions should not be silenced or suppressed. This one has to do with the ways in which accepted truths are held. Without some opposition or contrast, he claims, they will be held as mere prejudices.

It focuses upon chapter 14, specifically on his discussion of how virtues, practices, and institutions are interrelated. Virtues and practices require institutions which sustain them, but institutions are necessarily focused on external goods, and can have a corrupting influence upon practices. The virtues are needed in order to counteract this effect.
