Why is 100% of my stock portfolio made up of financially strong stocks paying high dividends? Because I see it as the safest way to invest in the stock market.  Not only can you easily receive a reliable dividend income of 6% of the portfolio even during recessions but because you choose financially strong stocks your portfolio will grow by several multiples over the years.  Since the stocks are stable they require few changes to the portfolio in a year.

Today's podcast was initiated by an arrogant investment advisor who wrote an article that denigrated self-directed investors.  i suspect that since he only has relationships with investors who invest through investment advisors that he has little understanding of self-directed investors.  I responded to his comments with an article that listed the problem the investment industry has with investment advisors without authorization helping themselves to their client's money. Every day I receive reports on these thefts of investment money..  

The investment industry largely self-regulates itself.  There are problems with this.  To me there should be an objective third party that investors can file their complaints against investment advisors with,  However, real protection would only come when the public becomes financially literate and understand how the investment industry works.  They need to understand that for maximum safety they can easily establish themselves as self-directed investors where no one touches their money but them.  Ultimately, I would like to see self-directed  investment courses taught at the high school level to prepare students for future investing.

In this podcast Ian will be reading Chapter 2 of DUEL.  To set the scene,  in Chapter 1 we learn that Rob Lyons, an analyst at the State Department, is being sent to the island of Saint Matts to investigate a televised interview by Texas Senator Rick Wilcox.  That morning Wilcox stated that the People’s Republic of China had secretly leased a long abandoned British naval base on the island. 

The Caribbean is the United States private lake. European nations have recognized this for more than a hundred years.   The idea that an Asian power would dare establish a naval base in the Caribbean is outrageous. The senator has called for a nuclear bomb to be dropped on this traitorous island. 

For two decades there has been competitive rumblings and posturing between the United States and China.  Within the a few years, China is expected to become the richest most powerful nation in the world.  How will the United States adapt to losing the dominant primary position it has held for 100 years?

The novel deals with a confrontation between the two powerful nations that explodes on the tiny, peaceful, impoverished Caribbean Island of Saint Matts.

For decades, the Chinese have been supplying aid to the Caribbean. They filled an aid vacuum once filled by the United States when they feared the spread of Soviet communism.

Politicians in Washington, St. Matts and China play important roles in this duel.  Rob Lyons becomes caught up in the whirlwind of assassination, power, and romance that swirls around him.

In Chapter two the scene opens in the Senator’s office just hours after his televised interview.

In this podcast we investigate how to pick the 20  best, financially strong, high dividend stocks for your portfolio from the 14,500 stocks available in North America. First you need to establish a self-directed stock trading account with a financial institution.  Once that is set up, you need to use your service's research tools to select 50 stocks that come close to meeting the criteria for the stocks you want to add to your portfolio.  From this 50 you select the best 20 that you are going to buy.

Scoring stocks is critical to picking financially strong dividend stocks that will pay good dividends through recessions and pandemics.  Through the last two recessions, I sold nothing (which means I lost nothing) and waited them out.  While the portfolio's value dropped tremendously, the dividends rolled in like clockwork.  I have lived off my dividends for 16 years and watched the portfolio reach new record values after each down turn.
