  • Mark McCoard & Phil McKenzie | “Unclear how deer farmers will meet emissions targets”

As part of this week’s “Opinion Maker” show of Sarah’s Country, Mark McCoard from Deer Farmers Association and Phil McKenzie from DINZ discuss how deer farmers are going to be able to meet climate change emission reduction targets.

While the industry welcomes many aspects of the Climate Change Commission’s interim report, it will be a challenge for deer farmers.

If the commission’s recommendations are adopted, livestock farmers will need to reduce their net methane emissions from 2018 levels by 13% by 2030, a further 7% by 2035 and another 4% by 2050.

As part of this week’s “Opinion Maker” show of Sarah’s Country, Rhys Griffiths from Deer Industry NZ discusses how three companies have formed a coalition to develop a New Zealand velvet market as a health food ingredient in China.

Deer velvet and red ginseng, two of the two most highly prized ingredients in traditional oriental medicine, have in recent years enjoyed an explosion in demand from South Korea for use in branded natural health products to combat fatigue and boost immunity.

In a marketing-only China velvet coalition – CK Import Export, PGG Wrightson and Provelco – will work together to get the critical mass needed to make an impact with the proposed new health food in China.

  • Michael Wan | “Red meat pivots into global retail”

As part of this week’s “News Maker” show of Sarah’s Country, Michael Wan from Beef + Lamb New Zealand discusses now NZ meat processing companies have had to pivot into selling to retail.

Changing eating patterns as global consumers respond to the covid-19 pandemic is forcing meat exporters to shift their focus to retail markets, which will require more stock supplied out of season.

The global retail sector is growing rapidly for meat exporters as consumers, forced due to the pandemic lockdown, are cooking for themselves at the expense of foodservice.

  • Emma Higgins | “GDT pushes prospect of higher milk prices”

As part of this week’s “News Maker” show of Sarah’s Country, Emma Higgins from Rabobank discusses what’s driving the ever-increasing dairy prices and how sustainable these prices are.

Sustained increases in Global Dairy Trade (GDT) prices have pushed the New Zealand farm gate milk price for this season into the mid-$7/kg territory, where it might deliver the second-highest Fonterra payout in 20 years.

The GDT index of 1170 and an average price of US$3746/tonne rose 3% in the latest auction, the 10th rise in 12 auctions over the past six months. During that time, the dairy market has lifted by 28% and it is now 20% higher than a year ago.

  • Dr Kioumars Ghamkhar | “Seed gold needs mining”

As part of this week’s “Change Maker” show of Sarah’s Country, Dr Kioumars Ghamkhar from Margot Forde Germplasm Centre discusses how we can grow our crops to withstand climate change.

This month’s Climate Change Commission recommendations include farmers facing the prospect of reducing stocking rates to meet carbon reduction obligations. But the head of the nation’s largest seed bank is urging a closer look at what it has on hand that may offer benefits in lower methane emissions.

Kioumars says the MFGC is by far the largest repository in the world for forage seed germplasm, containing over 2,200 species, including 2,500 wild variations of white clover alone.
