Today around 600 men still remain on Maus Island and their future unknown. Kurdish visual artist Farhad Bandesh is one of those who have been detained on Manus by Australia since 2013. A Kurd from Ilam, a Kurdish city in Iran, Bandesh arrived to Australia's Christmas Island in July 2013, before he, along with hundreds of asylum-seekers forcibly moved to Australia's off-shore processing centres in Manus. 

On the 26th of April, Farhad Bandesh will exhibit his art-work and his music at an exhibition called "The Big Exhale" in Brunswick, Victoria.

In 2016 Darwish Sido and his family arrived in Australia from the refugee camps in Lebanon. He with his young family stayed in the camp for the period of four years until the UN offered him to come to Australia. In 2012 Mr Sido fled from Afrin, Syria due to the civil war in Syria.

When they arrived in Australia they were resettled in Newcastle. A week later the children were registered at the local school. Mr Sido and his wife attended English classes. Not knowing the language was their main obstacle. 

Later on Mr Sido was given the opportunity to work at Rundles Tailoring on Hunter Street for over a year. In January 2019 Mr Sido opened his own alterations business, Sido Tailor, at Jesmond shopping centre.

Treasurer Josh Frydenberg presented his first budget 2019/2020 on Tuesday April 2nd focusing on working Australians, greater superannuation flexibility for retirees and a one off energy relief payment for eligible income support recipients. We spoke to accountant Nader Gariban about the Budget and asked who are the winner and the losers of this Budget.

The coalition's federal Budget is being seen as a budget that could swing borderline voters, despite the government having just six weeks before the federal election and consistently trailing in the polls.

Political analysts say the government has used this Budget to woe voters and to gloss over its previous turmoil, including the leadership spill that saw Malcolm Turnbull ousted in 2018.

With tax relief and big infrastructure spending on the way, some believe it could be enough to snatch a coalition victory in the next election rather than the expected defeat.

Dr Musa Kaval teaches at the faculty of Political Science at Salahaddin University in Kurdistan Region. In 2016 he founded an organisation called Internal Peaceful Movements-IPM (Bizava Aştiya Navxweyî) with the aim to spread peace and tolerance amongst Kurdish parties and people.
