Nihad was captive for the period of one year and three months. During this time she was sold three times as a sex slave. The third time she was sold she was raped and fell pregnant. After the birth of the child she escaped from ISIS and left the baby behind. The boy will turn two in July.

During her captivity with ISIS she was treated inhumanely and suffered enormously due to their brutal treatments.

Nihad’s two brothers and two male cousins are still missing and no one knows whether they are dead or alive.

Recently a mass grave containing bodies of dozens of people thought to be Yazidis enslaved by ISIS group was found in northern Syria with many of the victims being women.

Yazidi communities in Toowoomba, Wagga Wagga and Coffs Harbour held rallies to highlight their plight.  

We spoke to Nihad Barakat regarding her time of captivity with ISIS, her plea to the Australian government and the peaceful rally she attended in Toowoomba.
