Federal Liberal MP Julia Banks says the leadership battle and bullying from within her party are behind her decision to quit parliament at the next election.

Ms Banks, who holds the marginal seat of Chisholm in Melbourne's east, says she felt compelled to speak out, saying she would not tolerate bullying or intimidation.

Her allegations come as concerns are also raised by some Indigenous groups about the appointment of Tony Abbott as special envoy on indigenous affairs.

New South Wales Services for the Treatment and Rehabilitation of Torture and Trauma Survivors/STARTTS held a forum, Refugee Communities in Cultural Transition/ CiCT - Sharing our Stories on 23 and 24 August.

The aim of the 2-day public forum is to provide opportunities to learn from the experiences of new and established communities and will address the challenges they face in gaining a sense of acceptance and belonging within the wider community.

Following the successful of a one-day forum in 2017 where 230 people attended, this year’s CiCT forum featured speakers representing over 20 refugee communities in NSW.

Special guest speakers included: Paul Power, CEO Refugee Council of Australia (RCOA) and Member of the Refugee Resettlement Advisory Council for the Australian Government; Dr Munjed Al Munderis, Orthopaedic surgeon, human rights activist and Ambassador for the Australian Red Cross; Prof. Jim Ife, author and professor of Social Work at Western Sydney University and Dr Asha Chand, Associate Dean School of Humanities and Communication Arts, Western Sydney University.

In the past year many Yazidi refugees have been resettled in Toowoomba, QLD. Salim Haseen arrived   with his family in Toowoomba four months ago. Mr Haseen is happy to be in Australia where he feels safe with his family. He says the most difficult obstacle they are facing at the moment is not speaking the English language but he hopes they will learn it soon.

Salim Haseen was a teacher for the period of ten years in Sinjar (Shingal) and after fleeing Sinjar he taught in Duhok for four years. Besides being a teacher he is a short film and documentary director which he hopes to continue here once he learns the language.

Mr Haseen is awaiting his elderly parents to join them in Toowoomba soon.
