The number of people in the world forcibly displaced has reached its highest level on record and doubled in the past decade.

Refugee week is celebrated on 20 June. Today is the World Refugee Day too. We celebrate the strength and courage of people who have been forced to flee their home country to escape conflict or persecution. World Refugee Day is an occasion to build empathy and understanding for their plight and to recognize their resilience in rebuilding their lives. An agreement between the Indian and Sri Lankan (then Ceylon) governments allowed about halfa million people (recruited from Tamil Nadu India to work in tea, coffee, and coconut plantations of Ceylon by the British) to be sent back to India.  Pon Jayaseelan was one of them.  He was not even ten years old at the time of leaving the country of his birth.
