Music has informed and shaped Mike Janzen’s entire life. He has a unique background in the disciplines of jazz, classical, and popular music, combined with a technical piano prowess.

His portfolio includes commissioned pieces for the CBC, Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, and Steve Bell, as well as original arrangements of Broadway tunes for the symphony orchestra, which he performed with Sarah Slean and the Mike Janzen Trio across the country.

It's very simple. You know, you don't...you only...you're walking with everything you have is on your back in a backpack, and it's just a simple life. And I love being reminded that we don't need all the stuff that we have in our lives. You know, to exist. We need very little and to be reminded of that in a pilgrimage is really worthwhile. One of the Scriptures that means the most to me is from Lamentations 3 where God's mercies are new every morning. Great is His faithfulness and you know, walking the Camino is a great reminder to me of that. Starting fresh, encountering obstacles, encountering defeats, encountering struggles with Jesus by our side. His mercies are new every morning, you know, and He gives us enough that we need for each day and we can start again.

So, the arts are actually far more ancient disciplines of interacting with the Scripture in a way that sometimes actually gets past our mind and into our heart and our soul at a different level. You know, you hear a great story, you watch a great movie, and all of a sudden, it's a tearjerker, and you can't help it, you're just moved emotionally. Well, that does something to you and the stories we find in the Bible are doing that as well, right? You're reading these characters; you're reading what's happening with these stories that are unfolding. You read sometimes terrible stories of things that we don't even want to utter. And sometimes I'm reading the stories and I'm emotionally moved either to anger or to tears and just imagining the heartache that some of these people are experiencing. And that gets truth in us in a way that dissecting it doesn't.

Well, the whole point of the show is to point people to Jesus. That's the whole point of the show, but then we're hoping that that lands them right back in Scripture, because that's how we can know Jesus. I do think that the show brings Scripture to life in a way where it had maybe gotten stale for some people. And so, all of a sudden there's this colour where it might have been a little bit black and white, but at the end of the day, it's the living Word. And it's more exciting than anything else you can be spending your time on. So that was the heart behind the extra content and the devotionals is, how can we take advantage of the gaps between the seasons to actually push people toward what matters because we are not the Bible? Dallas is the first to say: I'm not a pastor, and this is not the Bible. And if you think otherwise, you're going to be let down. So, you know, we're storytellers, and we're filmmakers. The Bible is the Bible and that's ultimately where we want people to land.

I would say that it's primarily through my mother that I learned a love of God's Word - watching her read it daily, inviting us into prayer around the table before meals, asking us theological questions, and really holding a reverence for God's Word and passing that on to both myself and my brother.

Dr. Ross Lockhart (Dean, St. Andrew's Hall at The University of British Columbia) about the influence of Scripture in his life. Dr. Lockhart shares about his mother’s early faith influence on him and about how at the core of his identity as a baptized Christian, there is a deep love and reverence for God’s Word. 

Rev. Dr. Ross Lockhart is the Dean of St. Andrew’s Hall at The University of British Columbia. He is also the Professor of Mission Studies at The Vancouver School of Theology where he teaches courses in missiology and practical theology.

Ross has served congregations in the Reformed tradition from Halifax to Vancouver as well as sabbaticals with The Presbyterian Church in Ireland.  He is a weekly guest preacher in local congregations and Minister in Association at St. Andrew’s/St. Stephen’s Presbyterian Church in North Vancouver.

Dr. Lockhart, who wrote the book, Christian Witness in Cascadian Soil, says that in Cascadia (Oregon, Washington, B.C), one has the opportunity to explore Christian community and evangelism in a secular environment.

Art opens us to newness, to unexpected possibilities and the Gospel does the same...opens us to newness, the resurrection, the promise, a new heaven, new Earth. So, it opens us to newness and unexpected possibilities so I think there's this sort of parallel between the Gospel and the arts. One other thing I would want to say is that both the arts and the Gospel invite us to a posture of receptivity. What we like in our culture is control and management. Art says, listen, listen, look, receive and that posture of receptivity I think is essential for us if we're going to flourish as human beings.

Today’s guest is John Franklin, interviewed by Rev. Dr. Andrew Stirling. They’ll be speaking about the intersection of the arts and the Bible. 

John is the Executive Director of Imago, a national initiative in support of Christians in the arts in Canada. He is based in Toronto and, before joining Imago in 1998, he taught philosophy at Tyndale College. Currently, he is an adjunct professor in theology at Tyndale Seminary and Trinity College at the Toronto School of Theology, University of Toronto. His special interest is in theology and the arts. He has served on the Board of Lausanne Movement Canada for 13 years and is Coordinator of the World Evangelical Alliance - Mission Commission’s Task Force on Art in Mission.

Imago’s mandate is to affirm the artistic gift and to encourage and facilitate creative initiatives in the arts that will make a positive contribution to the Canadian cultural landscape.
