    Johann Merrich’s Brevi Storie: The EMS Series
    “From Belgrade to Berlin: Episode # 3 Bettina Wackernagel & Heroines Of Sound”
    ​​Directed by Bettina Wackernagel, Heroines of Sound is notably the most important initiative / festival dedicated to female electronic musicians, from the past and the present. The Festival format is not only a venue for concerts: it’s a music research platform and a network with many partners to empower the works of new talents: thanks to a cooperation with the Belgrade EMS, Heroines of Sound commissioned to Midori Hirano a new piece of music created with the notorious and rare Synthi 100. 
    Since 2014, the Berlin based festival has featured more than 260  top women artists from over 28 countries and presented showcases and cooperations with partner festivals and institutions in Poland, France, Denmark, Turkey, Italy, Austria, the Netherlands, Slovenia, Serbia and Mexiko. Due to  Heroines of Sound partnership a higher quota of female artists in music programs is achieved. Today the festival is esteemed for its pioneering work in presenting electronic music created by woman and has gained international recognition. In this episode, Bettina Wackernagel. will tell us the history and the future of Heroines of Sound.

    “From Belgrade to Berlin: Episode # 2 The Music of Midori Hirano”
    Midori Hirano is a classically trained pianist, composer and producer born in Kyoto and now based in Berlin. Thanks to Heroines of Sound Festival, Hirano has spent a residency period at the Belgrade EMS where she met the sound of the Synthi 100, thus composing a new piece of music – Distant Symphony – premiered at Heroines of Sound Festival in July 2021.

    Ci siamo lasciati con il compositore italiano Luciano Berio (puntata qui: https://www.bit.ly/mcpdi-berio) e ora, proseguendo con la consueta alternanza tra autori classici contemporanei e artisti rock, ecco la nuova puntata monografica dedicata alla cantautrice americana Patti Smith.
    In quest’ultimo episodio di La Musica come Pratica dell’Impossibile andiamo alla scoperta insieme a Michele Selva, della poetica della “sacerdotessa” del rock: un’icona che in oltre quarant’anni di carriera ha attraversato il punk, analizzando il mondo in tutte le sue forme d’arte, attraverso la musica, la fotografia, la poesia, i romanzi, la pittura e la scultura.
    Erano gli anni ’60 quando la giovanissima Patti Smith, poco più che ventenne, si trasferisce nella vibrante New York per trovare la sua strada: comincia la sua carriera musicale nello storico CBGB’s di Manhattan, già teatro di debutti come quello dei Talking Heads, di cui si è parlato nell'episodio dedicato alla band: https://www.bit.ly/mcpdi-talkingheads
    Nel 1975 incide il suo primo album, prodotto da John Cale, dal titolo “Horses”, a esso seguono gli altri tre importantissimi LP della sua discografia: Radhio Ethiopia, dedicata all’amato “primo poeta punk” Arthur Rimbaud (1976) e Easter (1978), che le porta il successo commerciale per la hit Because the Night, scritta con l'amico Bruce Springsteen.
    In pochi anni la musicista americana sale all’olimpo del rock e nel bel mezzo di questa ascesa, nella primavera del ’79, lascia New York per Detroit, per seguire la famiglia e ritirarsi per lungo tempo dalle scene.
    Non abbandonerà mai il suo impegno per i diritti civili e la vocazione per la sperimentazione musicale che con l’avvento degli anni ’00 si farà ancora più intensa e creativa con produzioni etnico musicologhe contaminate da suoni ambientali - come nel caso della collaborazione con i Soundwalk Collective e Philipp Glass - per un risultato assolutamente inedito e originale.
