Thanks for tuning in to the Armor Men’s Health Hour Podcast today, where we bring you the latest and greatest in urology care and the best urology humor out there.
In this segment, Dr. Mistry and Donna Lee answer a listener's question about blood in the urine. This 61 year old asks, "Is it normal for microscopic blood to show in your urine when you get older? If the answer is no, could it be caused by Peyronie's disease?" While many people are referred to a urologist with microhematuria, or microscopic traces of blood in the urine, Dr. Mistry explains that it is not normal for a person to see visible blood in their urine. If you see any blood in your urine, you should consult a urologist as soon as possible. Between 30%-50% of patients presenting with blood in their urine are diagnosed with cancer. Microhematuria can be caused by a number of issues and usually stems from either the prostate, bladder, or kidneys, and only 5% of patients are ultimately diagnosed with a serious disease like cancer. Peyronie's disease is not among the usual causes of microhematuria. For this listener, it is more likely that he has unrelated, co-occurring urinary conditions. Both, however, can be evaluated and addressed by a trusted urologist. If you or someone you love has had blood in their urine (even if it has since stopped), or would like to know more about Peyronie's disease and treatments, please give us a call today!
